The Weinstein Company To Remake Shaw Brothers Classics Posted: 23 Jul 2013 08:38 PM PDT In a move that is sure to further antogonise the martial arts fanboys, Film Business Asia has reported that The Weinstein Company is teaming up with Celestial Pictures to remake Shaw Brothers classics Come Drink With Me and The Avenging Eagle. Harvey Weinstein will co-produce the films with David Thwaites, based on scripts by John Fusco, all three of whom are currently working together on the Yuen Woo Ping-directed Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: Green Destiny. This suggests that the new versions of the King Hu and Sun Chung classics will be straight remakes (rather than reworking the stories in a modern setting, for example), but as yet there seems to be no confirmation of exactly what TWC and Celestial have in mind.Harvey Weinstein has angered... Video Reflections: THE JEFFREY DAHMER FILES Looks Into The Abyss Posted: 23 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT Now on DVD, The Jeffrey Dahmer Files is a documentary that attempts to tease out the effect the infamous serial killer's actions had on the city of Milwaukee Wisconsin, particular the largely black neighborhood where he lived when he committed his crimes. The film, originally titled Jeff, debuted last year at SXSW. In his review for Twitch, Scott Weinberg wrote that it "whittles a massive, disturbing story down to its essence. ... From the memories, insights, and anecdotes of Pamela Bass, Pat Kennedy, and Dr. Jeffrey Jentzen, we learn all we need to know about Dahmer's repulsive activities. If you're looking for a documentary that focuses on Dahmer's childhood, his psychoses, or the media frenzy surrounding his arrest, look elsewhere. This film, to its credit,... Fantasia 2013 Review: MAGIC MAGIC Spirals Into Madness To Great Effect Posted: 23 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT We get to a point midway in Sebastián Silva's empathy endurance test, Magic Magic, where Alicia, a blonde girl in a bathing suit is standing on the edge of a cliff, alone. She goes through the motions of trying to work up the resolve to take the plunge into the ocean several meters below. She laughs uncomfortably, a touch of hysteria, has awkward stop-starts that involve jittering hand movements and unflattering body language. Below, her companions have already made the jump and are waiting for her. Their words of encouragement eventually move to increasingly less polite cries of "Do it, already" or "Finish something you've started." Cut to an awkward boat-ride back to the cottage. This scene might be the litmus test on whether or not you... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Guanajuato 2013: Full Q&A With Fabio Grassadonia And Antonio Piazza, Directors Of Italian Mafia Film SALVO Posted: 23 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT The Italian film Salvo won two of the Critics' Week Prizes at Cannes 2013 (Grand Prix and France 4 Revelation Prize) and now its directors, Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza, are presenting it at the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico. After the first screening of the film, there was a Q&A with Grassadonia and Piazza. It was almost midnight and the theater was, sadly, pretty empty. Many people left the showing, maybe because they expected a Mafia picture with action and blood. Instead, we all got a quiet gem, about a Sicilian hit man named Salvo, who could have been easily another "man with no name," and his relationship with a blind girl, sister of another mafioso. Not many questions were asked, so here's the... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Fantasia 2013 Interview: Talking IT'S ME, IT'S ME With Miki Satoshi, Adrift in Montreal Posted: 23 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT Director Miki Satoshi is perpetually seen around the festival wearing a button-down Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses (even at night), and a trucker cap featuring the spartan logo of 'Standard California.' He takes off the latter for an occasional adjustment and you can see his wild, bushy hear retain the exact shape from the mould of that hat, its personality very much defined by its environment. He is quiet and a bit reserved, opting for cranberry juice rather than lager at the pub on the evening prior to the screening of his latest film, It's Me, It's Me, but is quick to laugh and is charmingly accommodating. There are many fans of the Japanese director's work in these parts (myself included), particularly of his previous indie hanging-out... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

EXCLUSIVE First Look At The THANATOMORPHOSE Trailer Posted: 23 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT Following its North American Premiere at Fantasia last night, Twitch has an exclusive first look at the trailer for Eric Falardeau's Thanatomorphose - and it's a brutal, bloody, bruised and beaten affair all round if this 85-second glimpse is anything to go by. BIG ASS SPIDER! Crawling To U.S. Theaters In October Posted: 23 Jul 2013 10:30 AM PDT Creature feature Big Ass Spider! will be crawling into select U.S. theaters on October 18. Directed by Mike Mendez, the horror-comedy -- with the emphasis firmly on comedy -- had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this year. I will admit: I had an adult beverage or two during the movie, and I believe many members of the audience at the midnight screening did, too. Still, it's a fun little b-movie, and a good one to enjoy with friends. From my review: Big Ass Spider! has fun with the idea of a giant spider terrorizing Los Angeles, mostly by centering the film around the unlikely heroic duo of expert exterminator Alex Mathes (Greg Grunberg) and security guard Jose Ramos (Lombardo Boyar). ... What differentiates the... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Unearthed! THE WICKER MAN: THE FINAL CUT Promises Robin Hardy's Original Vision Posted: 23 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man has become an unwavering classic that is still capable of chilling modern audiences. Yet, when the director spoke with Twitch's Kurt Halfyard and Michael Guillen back in 2011, he ruefully observed, "The actual cut of the film which I consider to be my cut, as the director, was never shown in the UK at all. They only showed a sort of butchered cut which for some reason became quite popular." Good news: Hardy's cut has been unearthed! Screen Daily has the story, in Hardy's own words: "StudioCanal contacted me last year in their search for the original materials that have been missing. "I'm very pleased to announce that StudioCanal have been able to find an actual print of The Wicker... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Sex Addiction And A Lonely Indonesian Taxi Driver: SOMETHING IN THE WAY Trailer Posted: 23 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT An official Berlinale Panorama selection from Indonesia earlier this year, Something in the Way comes from director Teddy Soeriaatmadja following his 2011 well acclaimed Lovely Man. with cast Reza Rahadian, Ratu Felisha, and Verdi Solaiman. (Reza Rahadian played as former Indonesia president in last year Indonesia top grossing film Habibie & Ainun).I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, since it doesn't have a theatrical release date in Indonesia -- maybe due to its more indie nature, production, and distribution, or because of sensitive thematic issues -- but Lovely Man is one of the best Indonesia pictures i watched last year. and this trailer looks promising. Here's the official synopsis. Check out the trailer below! Ahmad is a taxi driver in Jakarta. He is addicted... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
