Chicago's Midway Drive-In Needs Your Vote Posted: 03 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT Every year here in Chicago I attend a knockout horror convention called FLASHBACK WEEKEND. It isn't just a place for folks to get drunk and have stuff signed. The film lineup is always stellar, the guest list is a surprising mix and the feel of it is very laid back. Everybody talks to everybody else and is there to have fun rather than one up or impress each other. It's been going on about 11 or 12 years and is run by this great couple named Mike and Mia Kurz. For awhile they even did an impromptu 35mm drive in at the actual con in the hotel parking lot but that got too expensive. Instead they did something crazy, stupid, wonderful. They bought an actual failed drive-in,... |
Check A Pair Of Trailers For Jon Yeo's LEVIATHAN AGES Posted: 03 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT The trailers for director Jon Yeo's Leviathan Ages may not tip much about the storyline to his short film but one thing is clear: The man knows his way around an odd and compelling image. Here's how he describes it:High up amongst craggy hilltops sits the ancient and powerful monument. An imposing temple, from where the Empire has been ruled harshly. Inside, a decrepit inner sanctum. Its dull crumbling walls are defaced with tribal markings. Half turned to dust and dead wired, a still and dormant place. The Emperor sits centrally in the chamber. Proud, defiant, adorned in ceremonial robes. These are his last moments, in a trance like state our illustrious leader begins to conduct an aeons old ritual. With telekinetic grace, nine stones levitate,... |
Feratum 2013: Official Selection Revealed Posted: 03 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT In exactly one month, the second edition of Feratum (the International Festival of Fantastic, Terror and Science Fiction Films) will begin its activities in the "magical village" of Tlalpujahua, Michocán, Mexico. It's sounds awesomely crazy: within just four days (October 3 to 6), Feratum 2013 is going to screen more than 30 feature length films! Not enough? Well, more than 70 short films are also waiting for you. The festival announced yesterday its complete official selection, which consists of five different categories: feature length films, feature length documentaries, international short films, animated short films and Mexican short films. A total of 106 projects form Feratum's official 2013 selection and that won't be all, as some other events (including the special screenings) are yet to be revealed.... |

Macabro 2013: An Encounter With Lamberto Bava And Luigi Cozzi (Part 2, Cozzi's Giallo Master Class) Posted: 03 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT This is the second and final piece about my encounter with legendary Italian filmmakers Lamberto Bava and Luigi Cozzi at Macabro 2013. It's actually just about Cozzi, since Bava wasn't a participant of the conference, celebrated at Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional. Bava was simply another member of the public. The festival asked Cozzi to do a conference/master class about giallo, and well, he ended up saying pretty much everything you need to know about it, and then some. Going from the history of the term "giallo" to personal stories about his relationship with Dario Argento, Cozzi's master class was something to smile at. Without any more prelude, I leave you the gallery with the most memorable quotes from the talk (and from the little Q&A that followed)! Note:... |
