Venice 2013 Review: MOEBIUS Is Insane and Brilliant

Posted: 03 Sep 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Kim Ki-duk has shocked many a festival/arthouse audience over the years, ever since he used fishhooks to terrible effect in The Isle (2000). Watching his films can be an uncomfortable experience and while he has perhaps gone overboard in the past, he's never been outrageous just for the sake of it. Spectators, for their part, have steadily become more drawn to his works. With his new feature Moebius, never has he so deliberately sought to shock them. His message, framed in a terrifying and morbidly humorous narrative that recalls the tropes and themes of Greek tragedy, is clearer than it's ever been. It's also never been quite this powerful. A woman catches her husband cheating and in a fit rage brings a knife into his...

Watch Now! Kubrickian Teaser for Jonathan Glazer's UNDER THE SKIN

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 06:24 PM PDT

It has been seven long years since Jonathan Glazer's masterfully modulate, and quite Kubrickian Birth.  While this seems a long time to go between feature films, the wait is over, as Under The Skin is set to play Venice tomorrow, and TIFF shortly thereafter.  (For those keeping score, this film is my most anticipated TIFF title this year.)  The film features a mysterious Scarlett Johansson trolling the spare roads along the Scottish moors picking up hitchhikers for nefarious reasons.  It is based on Michael Faber's novel of the same name that is quite roundabout in offering details to the reader as the plot unfolds, and as such could be classified as one of those 'difficult to adapt' kind of books.Glazer seems to have everything under...

Indie Beat: 5 Most Intriguing Indies In September

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT

While I am not feeling as hot on the independent releases this month as I have in the past couple, (the word "ho-hum" comes to mind) there is no doubt some good stuff coming the U.S.A.'s way this summer's end. I've picked what I think are the five most intriguing titles to keep an eye out for in theaters this September, plus the rest of the gang.If you're outside of the U.S. what are some of the titles you are looking forward to this month?  ...

Watch The Trailer For TIFF Selected Norwegian Comedy THE IMMORAL

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Soon to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, an English subtitled trailer for indie Norwegian comedy The Immoral has arrived online. It's raw and edgy stuff and almost certainly not to everyone's tastes but also promises to be quite biting and offer a completely different look at Scandinavian culture than we are usually presented with. The festival describes it like this:Lars Daniel Krutzkoff Jacobsen's corrosive look at contemporary Norwegian society is also a hilarious and provocative comedy that cuts across class lines and rampages through notions of good taste, as it follows an ex-soldier and a single mother who go into the prostitution business after getting kicked off welfare.Check the trailer below....

Camera Japan Festival Reveals Full Line-up

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT

In a few weeks time, Rotterdam will kick off the annual Camera Japan Festival. As always this is something to rejoice for local Asian film fans (like me), because while the festival celebrates several different aspects of Japanese culture, the biggest centerpiece of the festival is still its film programme. And that programme can now be found online in its entirety. As usual it's a great mix of small and big, live-action and animation, short and long, new and old, documentaries and fantasy. The big retrospective screenings are for Ozu's drama Tokyo Story and Kawashima's comedy Burden of Love. The big titles include Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, Outrage Beyond, Land of Hope, Gatchaman, and Shield of Straw.Oh, and if those sound too serious,...

Review: THE FACE READER Is a Terrific Period Yarn

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Though absent from Korean marquees this year until now, the period Korean film makes a big comeback with the release of Han Jae-rim's arresting The Face Reader. Sublimely mounted, intriguingly plotted and featuring a terrific cast, this seems the ideal film for Chuseok (Korea's biggest holiday), which it was no doubt carefully tailored for. Nae-gyeong, Korea's most skilled physiognomist (face reader) lives a secluded life with his son and brother-in-law until one day he is recruited by the gisaeng Yeon-hong. During his time in town he becomes involved in a murder case. After solving it he attracts the interest of King Munjung who engages him to identify potential traitors in his circle. Soon after, the King dies and leaves behind a power struggle between Kim...

EYES OF THE SPIDER / SERPENT'S PATH DVD Hitting Shelves In UK On September 9

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Films like Cure, Pulse and Retribution have helped to firmly establish director Kurosawa Kiyoshi as Japanese's master of suspense. As previously reported his rarely seen 1998 classics Eyes Of The Spider and Serpent's Path will soon be released on DVD in one package by UK distributor Third Window Films, and we now have an official release date. This is the first time for these 2 rare films from Kurosawa to be released on DVD outside of Japan.  When oddball auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa received an offer to make two films in two weeks, on a low budget and using the same cast, the result was the cinematic equivalent of fraternal twins. Though both Eyes of the Spider and Serpent's Path are gangster films about the desire...

Morelia 2013: Cuarón's GRAVITY Is The Opening Film

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT

After confirming its official Mexican selection, as well as the visit of Alejandro Jodorowsy, the Morelia Film Festival (FICM) 2013 has ready the third big announment: Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity will be the opening film. Many people predicted this to happen, and now Gravity is confirmed to open another festival after Venice 2013 (where it got mostly amazing reviews). Twitch's Pierre Hombrebueno watched it there and remarked this: "Gravity by Alfonso Cuarón is virtuosic masturbation: great camera work and unforgettable long shots in the infinite darkness of outer space. The real problem is that there's actually nothing to narrate, with the movie having a very poor plot (could this have been turned into an hour short feature? Possibly), and by the halfway mark things start to get repetitive....

Interview: Malgorzata Szumowska On Her Latest Film, Female Sexuality And Poland

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 09:30 AM PDT

While attending the 2013 Transylvania Film Festival (full report here), I happened to meet internationally acclaimed Polish director, Malgorzata Szumowska. Malgorzata was at the time touring with her Berlinale Teddy Award winning In the Name Of (W imie...) In The Name Of is the story of a gay priest wrestling with carnal desires while trying to help young orphans in the Polish countryside. Events start taking a dark turn after the suicide of a boy under his auspice. Skeletons start falling out of the closet, as well as the priest's sexuality. Szumowska has made a film not only about the church secrets and its approach to the subject of homosexuality, but also about her country. In our chat Malgorzata also discussed the lack of female...

Macabro 2013: An Encounter With Lamberto Bava And Luigi Cozzi (Part 1)

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Friday, August 30. I'm standing in line at Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional (the Cinematheque) for the definitive highlight of this year's Macabro Film Festival: the homage to legendary Italian filmmakers Luigi Cozzi and Lamberto Bava. It's going to be one unbelievable evening, I mean, aside from Cozzi's conference about giallo there's the screening of his 1980 film Contamination, and of Bava's Macabre. I have already seen one Cozzi film during the festival: Paganini Horror. Real fun. I'm still laughing thanks to its silly dialog. On the contrary, I missed the two Bava movies so far screened (A Blade in the Dark and Demons). Though I don't miss the chance to shake hands with him, once he makes his appearance near the line. He arrived a bit earlier...

Also chatted about Morgan Spurlock's One Direction 3D concert film, a doc that ends up more a commercial than an actual feature film, but with glimpses of what could have been. Also chatted about Our Nixon, the found footage film that sheds new light on the Watergate era.Video embedded below...

Let's See If You Love The Quirky Trailer For Peruvian Comedy THAT THING YOU LOVE

Posted: 02 Sep 2013 06:30 AM PDT

Back in 2003, director Alvaro Velarde debuted Destiny Has No Favorites, a comedy riddled with social commentary about a housewife who rents her house for the filming of a soap opera, getting caught up in the fictional world being created in her own backyard. The movie marked the director as someone to keep tabs on.It's been a long wait, but Velarde is now back with his sophomore feature, That Thing You Love. The surreal comedy follows a bitter woman holed up in a lighthouse seeking revenge against a former childhood sweetheart who runs a hotel on the same beach. Aside from the Peruvian cast, the film features appearances from Pollyanna McIntosh (The Woman), British comic Trevor Lock, and French actress Anémone. The recently debuted trailer is...
