TIFF 2013: Watch The Teaser For Silent WW2 Thriller CANOPY Posted: 04 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT Australian filmmaking is firing on all cylinders at the moment, with the country showing four films in Venice and six in Toronto. Most of them are high profile indies, but one of the unknown wild cards screening at TIFF is Canopy, the debut feature from Aaron Wilson. Singapore, February 9, 1942. The Japanese invasion is underway. Jim (Khan Chittenden), an Australian airman, wakes up dangling from a tree by his parachute strings, somewhere in the middle of a vast wilderness overrun by hostile forces. Jim must fend for himself -- until he literally runs into a Singapore-Chinese resistance fighter, Seng (Mo Tzu-Yi), who has also been injured and is also lost. The men realize that their only hope of surviving lies with each other.Check out the poster... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Opening In Australia: THE GATEKEEPERS, A Terrifying Bird's-Eye View Of Conflict Posted: 04 Sep 2013 07:30 PM PDT Opening in select theatres in Australia on Thursday, 5 September, The Gatekeepers is a truly powerful film. Covering the never-ending war on terror and occupation from the early 60s until now, the film is half history lesson and half meta-spy retrospective. It is essentially 'Conflict 101' with one utterly crucial difference: The men behind these decisions, the former leaders of the Shin Bet, provide crucial commentary. These men are as shady as this counter-terrorism grp that they represent. Their conversations are frank but also orchestrated. The situation there has always been messy, but they claim responsibility for the successful prevention of attacks and push each failed decision on the politicians. It is hard to believe them, but I was irregardless captivated by them when I saw... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Fear & Loathing at TIFF 2013, Part I: Daddy Didn't Love Me Stories Posted: 04 Sep 2013 07:00 PM PDT CHAPTER 1: THE FOUR STORIESCHAPTER 2: HOOKERS, METH, LOFTS, AND CONDOS. IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA. It's just a little past one in the morning on a Saturday night. It's Labor Day weekend, it's officially the last weekend of the summer. The night air is already crisp and cool. It even smells like fall already. But the city is bustling with activity. There are men and women pooling out onto the sidewalks from the trendy new Fishtown bars, fumbling their way to the corner to chain smoke their American spirits and Camel lights. The men are all wearing their shiny muscle tees and open button ups with the collars popped. The women are all miniskirts and daisy dukes cut so off short that the bottom... Watch The Full Trailer For Alfonso Cuarón's GRAVITY Posted: 04 Sep 2013 06:45 PM PDT Even with all the praise from Venice and Jim Cameron calling it the "best space film ever done", and even with Alfonso Cuarón's previous film Children of Men still standing tall as one of the greatest films of last decade, something has been lacking in all the promo material from Gravity to make it a must-watch experience for me.This new fuller trailer for the film has remedied this somewhat; it's an up close and personal piece of mayhem, that features Sandra Bullock spinning out of control as the space station disintegrates around her. There are flashes of Clooney, and some semblance of story, but this is mostly a tease of tension and panic, and it works wonders. Check it out below.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Tollywood's Action Comedy King Manchu Manoj Mugs Like Mad In POTUGADU Trailer Posted: 04 Sep 2013 06:30 PM PDT I love Manchu Manoj. I've made no secret of the fact that Tollywood's Jackie Chan is an extremely guilty pleasure of mine. He's not a particularly great actor, but he is most definitely a Class-A ham and hands-down the most entertaining action performer in Andhra Pradesh these days. Rocking Star Manoj's latest is Potugadu, a remake of a Kannada film called Govindaya Namaha, a film in which a man (Manchu) falls in love with four different women. A couple of months back we gave you the first 45 seconds of footage, but this new trailer triples that amount, focusing a lot of dialogue (which I can't understand) and romance (which I'm also a bit at a loss for). However, there's a decent chunk of new action... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: LA MAISON DE LA RADIO Takes A Fun Look At A French Media Conglomerate Posted: 04 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT The latest film from French master Nicolas Philibert (To Be and To Have, Nénnette) takes a naturalistic and, at the same time, fun look at one of the most important media conglomerates of France, Philibert's camera takes a long and deep look at the insides of the big round building that is the house of Radio France International, with its own offices, press rooms, conference rooms, recording booths, and concert halls. Many of the elements and moments that we see in the film, specially those that are not inherently connected to the making of a radio show, or at least those that are part of the modern radio that we listen to nowadays, are covered, like the recording of a short story, read out loud... Fantastic Fest 2013: Shorts Lineup, From ANGST To ZIEGENORT Posted: 04 Sep 2013 05:30 PM PDT Serial killers, satanic rituals, and "an exasperated amphibious creature recalling the adventure that led him to a sushi restaurant chopping block" are featured in the first three short films announced for Fantastic Fest 2013 -- and there are more than three dozen more in the lineup. A quick scan reveals Masaaki Yuasa's "candy-colored" animated wrestling film Kick-Heart will be playing, too, which is the one I've heard the most about, but the real fun in the shorts programming is hearing about the ones that emerge as "must-sees," which then often leads to the discovery of delightfully bent visions. Also cool: Kier-La Janisse is now the festival's lead shorts programmer, which raises interest even higher. Her brief bio is below: Fantastic Fest is wildly excited that... Venice 2013 Dispatch, Lost The Count Of Days: A Sliced Penis Is Not So Funny Posted: 04 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT We've lost track of our days here at the Venice Film Festival. Time is so strict that it makes it impossible to talk about every single film and vision going on the big screen. The main competition remains maybe the weakest section of the glance, and we're actually not so sure that some hidden aces will still come the following (last) days. Roll on:... Keep On Truckin' In Hi-Def With The CONVOY (1978) UK Blu-ray Posted: 04 Sep 2013 04:30 PM PDT Bizarrely based on the 1975 country and western song of the same name, Convoy (1978) is late period Peckinpah and not his finest work by any stretch. This rambling tale of CB radio-toting truckers and corrupt lawmen in New Mexico still bears the unmistakable hallmarks of a Sam Peckinpah film, though, despite significant on-set difficulties (due to the director's multi-substance abuse) and a tamer subject matter than most of his canon. Put aside your preconceptions and it's an enjoyably daft, if slight, romp for anyone that found Smokey and the Bandit just a little too chirpy. Kristofferson is highly watchable as 'Rubber Duck' and Magraw does her thing as well as you'd expect (or indeed, not expect). There's a hugely entertaining turn from Ernest Borgnine as corrupt sheriff Lyle 'Cottonmouth'... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Venice 2013 Review: RIGOR MORTIS Pays Eerie Homage To Hong Kong Vampires Posted: 04 Sep 2013 08:30 AM PDT Hong Kong popstar-turned-actor Juno Mak continues to defy expectations with his directorial debut, a sombre and eerie eulogy to the hopping vampires of the 1980s that trades the sub-genre's signature laughs for world-weary melancholy from a fine cast of screen veterans. After the surprise success of Wong Ching Po's Revenge A Love Story, lead actor Juno Mak, who also conceived of the bleak thriller's premise, felt sufficiently empowered to step behind the camera and helm a feature film of his own. Inspired by the traditional Chinese vampire films of his youth, most notably Ricky Lau's Mr. Vampire (1985), Mak set out to resurrect and ultimately lay to rest that particular sub-genre of Hong Kong horror. Set in a shadowy, otherworldly apartment complex, populated by a... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Destroy All Monsters: Divergent Twilight, Catching Fire Posted: 04 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT First of all, this neo-genre needs a name. There are enough entries now, and whatever movement Twilight started in Hollywood ain't stopping. The stories tend to fall under either creature fantasy (The Mortal Instruments, The Twilight Saga) or near-future science fiction (The Hunger Games, Divergent). They unilaterally feature a teenaged female protagonist plucked from a stable family life to cross the mythic plane and engage in hero deeds. They almost always feature at least one, and often two, male suitors, who are usually magically or technically empowered, and often (at least initially) more empowered than the protagonist. At their spine is the romance between the female lead and one or both of the suitors, and a cycle of attraction, rejection, and reclamation by that lead...
