As we head out of the summer, the major Korean releases of the season are starting to tapper off, leaving the door for America to reclaim some ground ahead of the Chuseok holiday, which will likely see the balance fall back in favor of local releases. Total ticket sales jumped 20% year-on-year to 2.46 million admissions while the domestic market share was only 39%, half of where it stood last year. Posted: 01 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT

The Chilean film Las niñas Quispe (The Quispe Girls) had its world premiere at the International Critics Week at the Venice Film Festival this weekend. The independent section of the festival groups together seven debut feature films from all over the world. It has garnered some positive reviews and also managed to grab some distribution deals from Frank Mannion's Swipe Films. Also today, Fabula (the production company that brought us films like No and Gloria) released three brand new clips that show us how the visual style of the film will be, and you can watch them below. The synopsis of the film reads as follows:Based on facts that happened on 1974, Las niñas Quispe tells the story of the sisters Justa, Lucía and Luciana Quispe, sheperds...

Rumor Control On THE RAID Remake. Everything You're Reading This Week Is Wrong.

Posted: 01 Sep 2013 09:45 AM PDT

A bit of rumor control here on a story that surfaced at Bleeding Cool regarding the upcoming Screen Gems backed US remake of Gareth Evans' The Raid. The Bleeding Cool story reported that Jon and Erich Hoeber, the screenwriters of the Red movies as well as Battleship, were writing the US adaptation of The Raid. This is not now, and never has been, in any way shape or form, true. There's absolutely nothing to it. As was reported back in February of 2012, The Raid script was penned by Brad Ingelsby. Ingelsby was the writer then, and he remains the writer now. There's been no change. The story also - bizarrely - states that Evans is attached to direct the film (a bit they've since retracted). I...

Macabro 2013, Closing Day: THE HUMAN RACE Wins Best Horror Film, RESOLUTION Cited For Best Direction

Posted: 01 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT

The official closing events of Macabro 2013 took place at Cineteca Nacional on Saturday, August 31. The awards ceremony preceded a screening of American Mary, the out-of-competition closing film of the festival. Although this Canadian movie is phenomenal (read here Rachel Fox's Twitch review), the evening was ultimately cold, both literally and figuratively.  Thanks to rainy weather, the public attendance was considerably lower than that of other highlight events, like the inaugural showing of The Battery or the Luigi Cozzi conference. Macabro's awards ceremony consisted of only four categories, lasting no more than 10 minutes. And in the end, none of the awarded filmmakers were present to receive their honor! It was kind of disappointing, but they will get some good money and a nice...

Venice 2013: Miyazaki Hayao Officially To Retire!

Posted: 01 Sep 2013 07:05 AM PDT

Studio Ghibli president Hoshino Koji just officially announced the retirement of master animation director Miyazaki Hayao, whose latest feature Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) is screening in competition at the Lido. The announcement was made today at the Venice Film Festival's press conference room. Further questions about his retirement would not be answered. A dedicated press conference is to follow next week in Japan. Of course, retiring is something "Miya-san" has tried to do so twice before, but most probably this time the ending of his outstanding career will truly be the case....
