TIFF 2013 Review: HOW I LIVE NOW Does Young Adult Better Than Most Posted: 10 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT It's hard to throw a stone in Hollywood without hitting a Young Adult novel turned quickly-optioned screenplay. Nine times out of ten the story involves mythological creatures or futuristic themes. So you would be forgiven for dismissing the big screen adaptation of Meg Rosoff's 2004 novel How I Live Now as yet another sci-fi-ish Young Adult adventure. And in some respects you would be right. Yes, this film of the same name follows the similar tropes of eschewing hard character development for the convenient empowerment of teenage romantic love. But it does so with the steady hand of an accomplished director that is able to avoid the pitfalls that many of these films fall into and ultimately deliver a rather enjoyable character journey. The... |
TIFF 2013 Review: MAN OF TAI CHI Plays It Down The Middle Posted: 10 Sep 2013 07:30 PM PDT It's not entirely simply a matter of being snarky to refer to Keanu Reeve's directorial debut, Man of Tai Chi, as a vanity project through and through. Constructed as a showcase for martial artist Tiger Hu Chen, this is hardly the first time in the history of action films that an entire project has revolved around the unique athletic and choreographic talents of a given individual. Still, it's somewhat difficult to see what Keanu brings to the table, despite what appears to be at least capable direction in keeping with genre expectations, trading upon whatever is left from his Matrix-era klout and bringing another Yuen Woo-ping extravaganza to the (very) big screen.Shown at TIFF via newly installed digital projection beamed onto a proper sized IMAX... |
TIFF 2013 Review: OCULUS Isn't Just A Great Midnight Film, It's A Great Film, Period Posted: 10 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT The Midnight Madness slate usually has a few rules - keep things snappy, keep them gory, and you'll do well to keep the denizens of the dark with you for a running time that stretches well into the very early morning. Splatters of blood and blaring horns are often key, and often mood is sacrificed for needing to keep the audience jolted awake.Of all the things remarkable about Oculus, and there are many, it's that this is a slow burn film with a deliciously creepy mood, yet at the same time it remains exhilarating throughout. The fact that a "creepy mirror" film proves to be one of the highlights of this (or, frankly, any previous) Midnight Madness slate is a testament to one key fact:... |
Posted: 10 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT Seldom, if ever, has a film taken such potent source material as does John Krokidas' Kill Your Darlings and proven itself so completely and utterly clueless as to what to do with it. Krokidas here tackles the rise of the Beat generation, specifically Allen Ginsberg's entry to college, his early relationships with Jack Kerouac and William S Burroughs and - much more to the point - the entire group's involvement with young Lucien Carr - to whom Ginsberg would eventually dedicate his signature work Howl - and Carr's killing of his older gay lover David Kammerer. A true story this lurid populated with such larger than life - and yet completely true life - characters would seem to be a sure hit, such fascinating material... |
TIFF 2013 Review: SIDDHARTH Is A Beautifully Tragic Portrait Of India Posted: 10 Sep 2013 04:02 PM PDT It is every parents worst nightmare: You entrust your child to the care of another and when the allotted time for their return arrives they simply do not. They're just gone and you're left not knowing where or how or if they will ever return or what you could have done differently. And for Mahendra it is even worse. Being an uneducated, illiterate man barely scraping together enough for his family's daily needs as it is - hence sending away his young son Siddharth to a factory operated by his brother-in-law's distant cousin to help support the family - he has few resources to call upon, no allies in high places, cannot use a computer to conduct any research, cannot even take time away to... |

Review: OUT OF INFERNO 3D Has Its Spark Snuffed Out By A Piss Poor Script Posted: 10 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT The Pang Brothers' most accomplished film in quite some time still falls short of being legitimately entertaining. Despite some competently staged action and aesthetically pleasing 3D flames, the film is repeatedly hobbled by woefully bad writing that fails to grasp the mechanics of basic storytelling. After a training exercise goes wrong, Keung (Louis Koo) refuses to serve under his older brother, Tai Kwan (Lau Ching Wan) any longer and quits the fire department. Four years later he is celebrating the launch of his new fire security company, based in Guangzhou International Commercial Centre. Meanwhile, his now estranged brother is wrestling with the news he is soon to become a father. His wife, Si Lok (Angelica Lee Sinje), visits her doctor, located in the same building as... |
EXCLUSIVE Etrange 2013 Interview: Bong Joon-ho talks SNOWPIERCER Posted: 10 Sep 2013 12:30 PM PDT We couldn't let Toronto have all the fun.Sunday night, Bong Joon-ho's masterful Snowpiercer made its Paris premiere as part of L'Etrange Festival, and Twitch had two contributors on hand to confirm that yeah, basically everything you've been hearing is true The film is highly riveting, devilishly entertaining and dark as can be. It's also surprisingly funny in places, apeshit crazy in others, and the whole benefits from a visual palate much richer and more dynamic than what existing marketing materials would lead you to believe. To me, this was the best news of all. Well, almost the best news of all. The next day, Shelagh M. Rowan-Legg and I got to interview him. Before going further, a couple of notes: First off, something you... |
L'étrange 2013 Review: MAN FROM THE FUTURE, Time Travel That's A Little Too Predictable Posted: 10 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT We all have moments from our past that we would like to change. Whether it was something we did or something someone did to us, there is a moment that we think, if I could only change that one point, my life would be completely different. The trouble is, of course, that making that change may create something worse. Such is the premise of Man From the Future, written and directed by Cláudio Torres, a film that attempts to cross Carrie with Timecrimes with Peggy Sue Got Married. It's not quite as successful as that sounds. The film has its moments, and some fine comic performances but ends up being dragged down by length and predictability.João (Wagner Maura), or 'Zero', is a scientist who, with his... |
