HK Asian 2013 Review: THE WHITE STORM Is Bloated, Unwieldy, Yet Still Entertaining

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 11:00 PM PDT

Benny Chan cranks it up to 11 in his latest high-stakes crime thriller, but with the action, intrigue and melodrama all hitting fever pitch, The White Storm proves an entertaining, yet exhausting and unintentionally amusing affair.Three childhood friends, Tin (Lau Ching Wan), Wai (Nick Cheung) and Chow (Louis Koo), all joined the police force, and while Tin rose through the ranks to lead a narcotics bureau task force with Wai as his right hand man, Chow went deep undercover amidst a gang of drug-dealing triads. When Chow wants out, Tin pushes him in deeper, in the hope of catching a notorious drug kingpin operating out of Thailand, known as Eight-Faced Buddha (Lo Hoi Pang). But when the Thai operation goes awry, and only two of...

Gorgeous, Haunting Images From Estonian Fantasy JESUS' BLOOD AND RED CURRANTS

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Wending its way through the development process now in Estonia is an intriguing, fantastically charged fusion of both live action and stop motion animation in a stew of traditional pagan and Christian folklore produced by Katrin Kissa at Homeless Bob Productions. Titled Rehepapp (or Jesus' Blood and Red Currants for the international market), Kissa describes the film like this:The story is set in a pagan Estonian village where werewolves, the plague, and spirits roam. The villagers' main problem is how to survive the cold, dark winter. And, to that aim, nothing is taboo. People steal from each other, from their German manor lords, and from spirits, the devil, and Christ. To guard their souls, they'll give them away to thieving creatures made of wood and...

VIKING VAMPIRES Will Invade Norway!

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Though it's still a ways away from becoming reality, here's a little something special to file away for future reference: Bergan based production company MadMonkey have received development funding for their upcoming project Viking Vampires. And it is exactly what it promises on the tin ...The script now under way with writers Kjersti Rasmussen and Kjersti Steinsbø is set in modern times on the set of reality TV show Valhalla in which contestants must live as Vikings on the historical burial ground of Viking King Eirik Blood Tooth. But here's the thing: While Eirik was, indeed, buried there, he wasn't dead at the time. Not technically. He was a vampire and has been waiting thousands of years for someone to let him out ...The producers...

RAVENOUS Director Antonia Bird Passes Away At 54

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 02:15 PM PDT

Very sad new today with reports out of the UK that Ravenous director Antonia Bird has passed away at the age of 54. Though there is no official word yet on the cause of death I was personally in touch with Bird earlier this year trying to recruit her for a project currently in development at XYZ Films. Though interested in the project Bird ultimately passed saying only that health concerns were forcing her to take the rest of 2013 off to recuperate and she has clearly lost the battle with whatever that illness may have been.In addition to her feature film work - much of which featured her close friend Robert Carlyle in the lead - Bird also had an impressive body of work...

Bertie Carvel And Eddie Marsan Are JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Those who have already read Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell are already fully aware that the novel is arguably a modern classic of speculative fiction, a magic-infused alternate history of England that stands with the very finest works of the genre. It's riveting entertainment and just fabulously written stuff and so the news that it was being brought to the screen by the BBC was met with much enthusiasm when word of the impending adaptation broke earlier this year.Well, it gets better ... the principal cast was announced by the BBC today with Olivier award winning Bertie Carvel cast as Strange opposite impeccable character actor Eddie Marsan as Norrell. Veteran Dr Who and Sherlock director Toby Haynes is at the helm and while...

TRANSFORMERS 4 Set Hit With Second Extortion Attempt In Hong Kong

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 01:30 PM PDT

Dear Hong Kong triad gangsters: Michael Bay is not going to give you money. Stop asking.Just last week the story broke that Michael Bay had been assaulted on the Hong Kong set of Transformers 4 by two men demanding money, an assault later confirmed by police to be an extortion attempt carried out by men with known gang ties. And it's happened again, with Hong Kong police confirming that a crew member was approached on a rooftop by four men who "intimidated her and asked for money". One of the four - again, with known gang ties - has been arrested with police looking for the other three....

Arrow Video & Arrow Academy Will Own Your Soul In 2014

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Arrow Video has come a long way in the last four years. They've evolved from a giallo-centric label focusing on the classic works from Argento and '80s American slashers into the premier cult label in the world. The slashers and Italian horror are still there, but they're now supplemented by big name cult classics like John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China and minor masterpieces long thought forgotten by audiences like The Car. Each release is treated with the kind of care that cult film fans have always wanted but never thought possible, and that is what puts them heads and shoulders above their competition in the English-speaking world.Arrow's latest attack on cult film lovers' wallets is a doozy. The first three months of 2014...

The Many Dutch Angles At This Year's Golden Calves

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 12:30 PM PDT

Earlier this month, the Dutch Film Festival took place in the city of Utrecht. As film festivals go in The Netherlands, this is the most glamorous one we've got, with a high attendance of national celebrities, cameracrews, the works. Where Rotterdam draws the international art crowd, Utrecht beckons the paparazzi. One of the reasons so many VIPs show up is because this festival has its very own glamorous awards ceremony, the Dutch Oscars if you like: the Golden Calves. And although awards ceremonies often say more about which films have been best distributed, and the Golden Calves ceremony sure is not exempt from that, this overview of the nominees and winners still gives a pretty decent overview of what this year had on offer in...
