A First Look Behind The Scenes Of SS Rajamouli's EEGA Follow-Up, BAHUBAALI Posted: 24 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT Last year's top Telugu film, Eega, has been tearing up the festival circuit over the last few months, and it's creator, director SS Rajamouli, has finally released the first tiny bit of footage from his follow up feature, Bahubali. The new project, starring Telugu idol Prabhas, began shooting on July 6th, one year to the day after Eega hit cinema screens worldwide, and is currently deep in production. With an incredibly ambitious filmmaker like Rajamouli, one can only imagine where he'll go with this new feature, and the 2015 projected release date gives me the impression that they've penciled in a lot of post-production time, which actually bodes well for the film with this team involved. Not a whole lot is known about the film, however,... |
J.J. Abrams & Lawrence Kasdan Are Now Writing STAR WARS EPISODE VII Posted: 24 Oct 2013 03:30 PM PDT The well for any real solid news on the next installment in the Star Wars saga has been very, very dry as of late. While rumors on casting have been flying this way and that, it's still proved to be a lot of hot air in the end. Today, however, sheds some light on why things have been especially quiet over at the House of Mouse/Lucas.Michael Arndt, who was originally hired as screenwriter for Episode VII, is no longer attached to the project according to a press releases that appeared on StarWars.com. Up to bat now is the film's director J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, who was initially brought on board for the new film(s) as a consultant. While... |
Review: THE COUNSELOR, Deranged, Dazzling, And Diabolical Posted: 24 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT I was slack-jawed and spellbound while watching Cormac McCarthy's first original screenplay unfold on screen. Diabolically unpredictable and wildly discursive, problematic yet bold, the story itself is not the thing: it's the characters and the words, and the twisted criminal universe in which they exist, standing apart from anything resembling a conventional legal thriller. A desert-washed noir, The Counselor is set in the modern day, in the twilight zone where Texan bravado and Mexican fatalism collide with a woman who is an ice-blooded, fever-dream fantasy figure straight out of Jim Thompson. Waking up on a lazy afternoon under the sheets with a lawyer and his lady, the facts of the case are laid out plainly. The counselor ignores warnings raised by associates, enters into a... |
Watch The Green Band Trailer For Adrian Bogliano's HERE COMES THE DEVIL Posted: 24 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT When Adrian Bogliano's Here Comes The Devil screened at Fantastic Fest it pulled off a feat that I do not believe any other film screened at the largest genre fest in America has ever done, sweeping every award in its category. To say the film has been well received is an understatement and with Magnolia Pictures bringing the film to VOD on December 13th the time is coming when everyone can see why. A red band trailer for the film arrived online last week and that has now been followed by a green band effort to offer up a taste of what lies within. Check it out below.... |
Watch The Trailer For Jason Bognacki's Giallo Infused ANOTHER Posted: 24 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT After a string of giallo influenced short films writer-director Jason Bognacki is now wrapping up work on his debut feature Another. And while the classic influences are very certainly present the trailer promises that this is no mere string of name-check moments, with hats tipped towards the genre greats, but something infused with Bognacki's own unique voice as well.Compelled by the possibility that she could have a dark twin, Jordyn questions her own sanity, and reality itself. Jordyn's curiosity pulls her into a dark underworld of demonic possession, desire, and extreme indulgences churning a deadly witches' brew that tears her very soul apart. We first wrote about this one all the way back in of June of 2011 when it was in production as a half... |
The Helicarrier Eats Dirt In The First Trailer for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Posted: 24 Oct 2013 11:30 AM PDT Joe Johnstone's first solo outing for the Captain left me a little cold; the period detail was great, the rest not so much. The Avengers Assemble saw Chris Evan's Steve Rogers become a little more likeable as the butt of the cooler Avengers' jokes. This... well he's still the straight guy to Black Widow's more droll antics. Whatever your views on this strand of the Marvel universe this looks reassuringly portentous, with a healthy dose of geek-friendly banter. Plus, I'd watch Robert Redford in anything. And the helicarrier eats dirt.... |
Posted: 24 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT The Korean American Film Festival New York (KAFFNY) always includes an impressively eclectic collection of features and shorts, and this year's 7th edition is no exception. However, for the first time, the festival is organized around one specific subject: the Korean War and its impact on Koreans both in Korea and the U.S. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the armistice between North and South Korea, which never officially ended the war but only established a cease-fire. With North Korea in the news very often these days, the features and shorts playing KAFFNY this year provide valuable background in understanding the origins and the lasting effects of this conflict. One need not imagine some alternate history in which the Cold War never ended;... |

Review: BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR Does Coming-Of-Age With Phenomenal NSFW Aplomb Posted: 24 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT A stereotype used to exist in America that European (and especially French) films were all full of gratuitous sex. Back before the internet, VHS tapes, and days of easy access pornography, young boys would sneak into art house cinemas to get a look at those lovely bare bodies from across the Atlantic. Whether any of this is accurate, the stereotype made its cultural impact and somehow extremely graphic sex scenes in French films are greeted with slightly less shock by the typically more puritanical American public. Well, dust off those old theater blueprints, boys and girls, Abdellatif Kechiche's Blue Is The Warmest Color (aka La Vie D'Adele) is one of the most shockingly explicit features to cross the pond in quite some time. Oh, and... |
