Tokyo 2013: Tom Hanks Attends Green Carpet Opening Ceremony

Posted: 19 Oct 2013 12:32 AM PDT

The 26th Tokyo International Film Festival kicked off yesterday with a parade of stars along its green carpet to the theater where festival opener Captain Phillips was played. The carpet, green as opposed to the usual red, represents the festival's continued efforts at raising environmental awareness. While there was a sizable number of school kids out to catch a glimpse of their favorite pop star-turned-actor, (Matsu of Japanese boyband EXILE and Hyomin from K-pop group T-ara, in case you were wondering!) the real reason many turned out was to catch a rare glimpse of the Hollywood A-listers. Check out the gallery for shots of Tom Hanks, Kaiju and company....

COMMUNITY Returns January 2nd

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 04:30 PM PDT

Even after all the Behind-the-scenes drama and low (by every other network's standard) ratings, Community is now, along with Parks And Recreation, a veteran sitcom at NBC. I'll let you soak that all in for just a second longer. The schedule shuffle and cancellation bingo that regularly occurs during the fall/winter television season now positions the premiere of the fifth season of Community for January 2nd, with two back-to-back episodes before the show settles right back into its 8pm time slot on Thursdays. The show is returning with creator Dan Harmon steering the boat once again, only five episodes featuring Donald Glover, and none with Chevy Chase. Considering the topsy-turvy nature of the making of Community, since, well day one... and a less than stellar Harmon-less...

James Franco Will Happily Pour Gasoline Down Your Throat Unless You Watch This Red Band Trailer For HOMEFRONT

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 03:30 PM PDT

I'm sorry Jason Statham, but when your gravely-voiced tough guy type is put up against villains played by James Franco and Winona Ryder, well, buddy, you're automatically sent to second-tier status in your movie. And the movie in question is Homefront. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script for his Expendables co-star, which focuses on an undercover cop (Statham) coming to a po-dunk town with a serious case of the 'Heisenburgs', I mean... it's got a big meth problem. Franco and Ryder are tasked by Frank Grillo's meth kingpin with bringing down the whoop-ass on Statham. While the red-band trailer is pretty standard bang-boom fare, one can't argue with Franco's near Spring Breakers-level of horse-grinning, scene-chewing absurdity here.Homefront releases in the U.S. on Thanksgiving.   ...

Watch A New TV Spot For Juno Mak's RIGOR MORTIS

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 03:03 PM PDT

After a successful international festival run, Juno Mak's Rigor Mortis is heading to theater screens throughout Asia and you know what that means: New trailers. The main trailer out there now is the same one that has been circulating for some time now but it is also accompanied by a new twenty second TV spot. Here's how the Toronto International Film Festival describes it:An ominous-looking public-housing tower is the final rest stop for a miserable former movie star who's mourning the loss of his wife and son. Filled with the old, the weary, and the forgotten remnants of society, this last chance hotel nonetheless contains many comforts of Hong Kong life -- a noodle shop, a seamstress and a Taoist monk. Ghosts and spirits already...

Watch The Full Trailer For Malaysian Horror PENANGGAL: CURSE OF THE MALAYAN VAMPIRE

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT

There are a lot of strange ghost stories in South East Asia and one of my personal favorites involves a woman whose head can separate from her body and fly - with entrails dangling beneath - as it goes is search of food, newborn babies being a particular favorite. This particular monstrosity goes by a few different names in different areas but in Malaysia it is known as the Penanggal and it is the subject of an upcoming film.A naïve girl inadvertently inherits the penanggal curse from her guardian and wants desperately to be rid of it, until she starts tasting the power the penanggal accords to her, an otherwise ugly and simple girl with no chance at love or power in her life.Fresh off...

TADFF 2013 Review: STALLED Does Not Poop On The Zombie Comedy Genre!

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT

(Stalled plays as part of Toronto After Dark's Zombie Appreciation Night. It screens this Saturday, October 19th at 7:00pm at the Scotiabank Theatre) You may think to yourself "can an entire film play out within the confines of a workplace bathroom and not be some vain attempt by an indie filmmaker to show how cool they are?" More so, can an entire zombie film like Stalled do this? Within the brief history of the genre hapless and helpless victims have been trapped in homes, cellars and larger space alike. But a bathroom? I myself, doubtful as I was, am surprised to tell you that yes it does. It's Christmas Eve, and a soon-to-be-shit-canned maintenance gopher (Dan Palmer) is changing light bulbs and cleaning toilets instead of drinking egg...

Sitges 2013 Review: PEOPLE IN PLACES Is An Experimental Charmer

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Gente en sitios (People In Places) is the latest movie from Spanish director Juan Cavestany. Cavestany has an extensive background in both cinema and theatre as director and writer, but remains mostly unknown to the general public even in his home country. Most of his previous film efforts were completely self-funded, and Cavestany himself was in charge of writing, directing and distributing them. Gente en sitios has certainly raised a few heads here in Sitges, but given its peculiar nature, its chances of reaching a bigger audience or the commercial circuit remain pretty slim. The film doesn't follow any specific plot but is more of a collection of sketches and episodes that revolve around everyday situations and human nature, mostly from a surreal and comical point...

A motley assortment of characters join star Iko Uwais on the first teaser art for Gareth Huw Evans' upcoming The Raid 2: Berandal. With the film now in post production with an eye on a 2014 release and a teaser due in coming weeks, Evans has offered up a look at the first Indonesian teaser art for the film.Picking up the story right where the first film left off, The Raid 2 sweeps Rama (Uwais) into a much broader world of corruption and violence. Julie Estelle, Alex Abbad, Yayan Ruhian, Mathias Muchus, Tio Pakusadewo, Marsha Timothy, Cecep Arif Rahman, Matsuda Ryuhei, Endo Kenichi and Kitamura Kazuki all join the cast. XYZ Films (where, yes, I am a partner) co-produces along with Evans' own PT Merantau...

Morelia 2013 Review: How To Lose Weight And The Love Of Your Life In The Bittersweet But Formulaic PARAÍSO (PARADISE)

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Paraíso (Paradise) is an unconventional love story, at least on paper. This because the protagonists are far from a typical big screen plastic, pretty couple, the movie instead following an overweight Mexican couple. One can accept and even appreciate Mariana Chenillo's decision to work with characters that are real people with real problems without becoming overly serious. Paradise wants to explore an important issue like obesity - after all, Mexico has the world's highest obesity rate - while not pretending it is more than light entertainment, clearly inspired by American indie comedies. Carmen (Daniela Rincón) and Alfredo (Andrés Almeida), a married couple from Ciudad Satélite, decide to move to Mexico City, when Alfredo gets a good job at a bank. The first shots of the...

Review: SPECIAL ID Has A Serious Identity Crisis

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 07:51 AM PDT

Following a string of historical martial arts epics, Donnie Yen makes his return to contemporary action films with this high-octane tale of an undercover cop torn between duty and loyalty that never quite hits the mark.Almost from the word go, Special ID has proved a tempestuous project. After the incredible success of Ip Man and Ip Man 2, bolstered by the likes of Bodyguards and Assassins and The Lost Bladesman, Donnie Yen was finally savouring the superstardom that had threatened to elude him his entire career. Despite seeing off opposition from Denis To, Anthony Wong and Tony Leung to become the definitive onscreen incarnation of the wing chun master, Yen craved to return to the modern fighting techniques that he had showcased to incredible effect...

Review: CARRIE Remake Stays Close to the Original, Still Works

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 07:15 AM PDT

It's been 37 years since Brian De Palma turned Stephen King's first published novel, Carrie, into a bloody camp classic, more than enough time for the idea of a remake to become palatable (not to mention financially appealing). And its central elements -- high school bullying, religious fundamentalism, teen sexuality -- are timeless. If anything, the story is more chilling now than it was in 1976, when the idea of a student exacting lethal revenge on cruel classmates was almost unheard of in real life. The remake, directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry), does modernize a few plot details; for example, thanks to smart phones, bullying is now a multi-media experience. But overall it's astonishingly faithful to the original, with similar dialogue and almost...
