Review: Stiller Waters Fail to Run Deep In THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST

Imagine a would-be studio blockbuster that sets out to be all things to all audiences, a soaring positive journey of a film that manages to include a bit of social observation; an entertaining winner on all fronts. This is the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty imagines itself to be, never realizing its true fate lies in a $7 Blu-ray bin eight months from now, amid other such generic, quickly forgotten behemoths. That doesn't mean Mitty is a bad movie, but that's the type of movie it is:  well-meaning, but delusional - just like its lead character. It may appear to be a big thing, but in actuality, it's a one man show. That one man is the film's director and star, Ben Stiller. Throughout his...

Review: AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY Not Exactly a Family Destination

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 07:30 PM PST

If you like attending your own dysfunctional extended family gatherings, you'll just love paying to attend someone else's! That must be the prevailing assumption behind the decision to release this film this time of year. Having been through multiple mandated gatherings from Thanksgiving onward, family members are more likely than ever to be harboring seething resentment, or even at each others' throats. So why not take this yuletide opportunity to hold a silver screen-sized mirror to them? But, far be it from me to question the release strategy of Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the award-mongering moguls behind this uneasy star-studded adaption of the acclaimed Tracy Letts play. Clearly they're banking on star power to fuel this would-be Oscar machine. It's got Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan...

Review: GRUDGE MATCH More Than Matches Expectations

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:55 PM PST

"No matter how hard you guys work, you won't be your best." "It's the best we got."No, that response is not John Wayne in Rio Bravo. It's Sly Stallone responding to Kim Basinger in Hollywood's latest round of retiree-baiting, Grudge Match. In the film, aging boxing icons must get in the ring to settle an unresolved score from over thirty years ago. In this corner, it's Sylvester Stallone, weighing in as a little more rugged than his heyday, but impressively chiseled for 67. In the opposite corner, it's Robert De Niro, 70, weighing a good bit more than before but softer all around. From the opening sequence that mines clips from Rocky films and Raging Bull (colorized!) for a Jim Lampley news desk expository montage, it's...

Poster And First Still For BERBERIAN Director's DUKE OF BURGUNDY

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

Berberian Sound Studio director Peter Strickland is now in post on his new feature, The Duke Of Burgundy, and we've got a look at the first poster and still from the film. Borgen's Sidse Babett Knudsen stars with Chiara d'Anna with Ben Wheatley's Rook Films producing. Here's how Strickland and d'Anna described the film when it was first announced:The Duke of Burgundy, a dark melodrama, is set to star Chiara D'Anna (Berberian Sound Studio) as an amateur lepidopterist whose wayward desires test the limits of her lover's tolerance. "After damaging my eardrums with too many screams during the Berberian sound mix, I wanted to make something tender and quiet, but also quite intense. It's a simple love story about a devoted couple whose intimate needs are rarely in harmony" says...

Austrian Cinemas Experience An Outbreak Of BAD FUCKING. Check A Quintet Of Teasers.

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

In Austrian cinemas now is Harald Sicheritz's adaptation of Kurt Palm's cult hit satiric novel Bad Fucking, an anarchic comedy about life in the titular, typical Austrian village. Winner of the 2011 Friedrich Glauser Prize, the novel is a significant local hit and from the look of the teasers for the film version it's not hard to see why.Yes, the five teasers below are dominantly in German - with some English mixed in - but the gags are obvious enough. Take a look!...

Review: MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM Never Stops To Plant Its Feet

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Idris Elba is a mighty fine actor, and he gives a very striking impersonation of Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. More's the pity, then, that the film, directed by Justin Chadwick, comes across as headlines dramatized from a Wikipedia page rather than an exploration of the many complex issues addressed by the inspirational civil rights leader. Nor does it paint a detailed portrait of an influential man's personal or political life. Instead, in its insistence on stuffing decades worth of life into 139 minutes, the film races through the highlights, stopping on what it considers important events, poking its head around like a hungry cat in search of tasty morsels, and then, to mix figures of speech, hitting the "chapter skip" button...

Watch The Trailer For French Sci-fi Short ON/OFF

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Thierry Lorenzi's sci-fi short On/Off premiered at the Paris International Film Festival in November. We have the trailer to share with you. Obsessed by a mysterious voice message, astronaut Meredith will face its paradoxical condition in order to stay connected to his humanity.On/Off is the the culmination of three years of work and though the trailer may be vague in the message what is clear is that the finished project looks great. The visual effects come with the help of Montreal based effects company RODEO FX who have done work on projects like Pacific Rim. Comparisons to that other floating in space film of recent memory will be obvious but we would like to see how Lorenzi's vision plays out in its short run time. Further reading into...

Parental Thoughts About THE WOLF CHILDREN

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

(Warning: I'm getting personal, and there are some spoilers, not many though...) This month, Manga UK and Madman Australia release Hosoda Mamoru's The Wolf Children, finishing up that title's worldwide home-distribution in English-speaking regions. The eighteen months since the world premiere have been a victory tour of critical acclaim, the film scooping up awards and money by the boatload. Distributing it now isn't bad timing either, as this is almost the perfect holiday movie to watch as an adult. December is always associated with spending time with your family, and I know of few films that manage to pinpoint what it means to be part of a family, and more: what it means to be raising one. Hosoda's film is not just good: it's excellent,...
