Sexy SINK HOLE Says ... Well, Don't Listen To It Posted: 22 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST Presented in the form of a grindhouse trailer with a nasty bite, Sink Hole says more in 89 seconds about the inadvisability of listening to strange voices than any feature film I can think of. The short played on the festival circuit, hitting hot spots such as Sitges, Boston Underground, Calgary Underground, and Slash Film Fest. Greg Hanson directed. Watch it below, and then pay heed to its advice, i.e. beware sexy voices emanating from your kitchen.... |

Catherine Badet-Corniou plays the mother, Adrien Bienvenu is the son, and that's all you need to know to enjoy the complete short, presented below.... |
Sundance 2014 Review: WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS Will Make You Laugh 'Til You Bleed Posted: 22 Jan 2014 04:00 PM PST From the opening title card that reads "New Zealand Documentary Film Council," it's pretty clear that What We Do in the Shadows is not going to be your typical vampire movie. Co-directed by Taika Waititi (Eagle Vs. Shark, Boy) and Jemaine Clement (of Flight of the Conchords fame), this story of a group of vampires living together in Wellington, New Zealand is part Spinal Tap and part The Real World. What it definitely is, however, is all funny. Based mostly on improvisations, this mockumentary showcases the talent of some of New Zealand's most hilarious comedians and is sure to have you laughing until you bleed. Set mostly in an old mansion, the vampires take turns talking to the camera in good reality TV-show style. Taika... |
Posted: 22 Jan 2014 02:30 PM PST I've been here before. This all looks quite familiar. It's not quite deja vu though. The window dressing is different. They've swapped a cute dog for goldfish. I think that's a new couch. But that's the same ottoman.Craig Johnson's The Skeleton Twins, his follow up to the 2009 Mark Duplass starring True Adolescents, is, to put it politely, a safe bet. It checks most of the boxes for what I now know to call a "A Typical Sundance Film". These are usually American made movies with likeable and recognizable actors. Their stories are generally about coming home and facing family; getting over past demons and healing. They are a little sad, no doubt funny, and of course uplifting. They are competently crafted crowd pleasers, derived... |
Sundance 2014 Review: COOTIES Delivers Bloody Laughs Posted: 22 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST What happens when the creator of Saw and Insidious teams up with the creator of Glee? Cooties happens, a gleefully bloody crowd pleaser of a horror-comedy weighted more towards the comedy end of the spectrum blessed with a sterling cast and a host of ravenous schoolchildren in need of putting down.Elijah Wood stars as Clint, an aspiring writer recently returned home to the small town of Fort Chicken where he is once again living with his mother while taking on a job as a supply teacher to pay the bills. Nope, the writing thing isn't going so well for Clint, as he struggles to make his way towards a workable manuscript for his first novel - a possessed boat story titled Keel Them All. Or... |
The Zombie Squad Arrives With Full Trailer For DEAD SNOW 2: RED VS DEAD! Posted: 22 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST Tommy Wirkola's Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead went down a treat with audiences at Sundance and if you're looking for a clue as to why, well, here's a great big one in the form of the brand new Norwegian theatrical trailer. Two plus minutes of giddy blood and guts this thing captures the tone of the film absolutely bang on. Here's how the fest describes things:If the worst day of your life consisted of accidentally killing your girlfriend with an axe, chain-sawing your own arm off, and watching in horror as your closest friends were devoured by a zombified Nazi battalion, you'd have to assume that things couldn't get much worse. In Martin's case, that was only the beginning. Picking up immediately where the... |
Review: Slovenian School Drama CLASS ENEMY Presents Collective Crime And Individual Punishment Posted: 22 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST The times seem to be ripe for a new generation to overthrow the old one and usurp the ruling sceptre. The New Waves are splashing on all sides, yet still some go unnoticed. Such is the case of Slovenia. Lately, some interesting works spawned in this obscure corner of Europe have been spearheaded by a child-prodigy, Rok Biček, who at the age of 28 has already forged an award-festooned feature touring the globe. Class Enemy is not a brat-beget product, even though there is some inalienable punk quality in it. Class Enemy is the textbook example of a small film making a big (and legitimate) gesture. Biček´s theme is rather common, a darker spin on coming-of-age and identity crisis. The basic set-up does not much... |
BREAKING: Joseph Gordon Levitt To Star In Robert Zemeckis' TO REACH THE CLOUDS Posted: 22 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST Joseph Gordon-Levitt is taking to the skies but not as a superhero.Twitch has learned that Levitt will take the lead in Robert Zemeckis' adaptation of Philippe Petit's memoir To Reach The Clouds. The subject of 2008 documentary Man On Wire, Petit is a high wire walker who gained international notoriety in 1974 when he walked - without permission - across a wire strung 1350 feet above the ground between New York City's Twin Towers.Zemeckis' interest in the story has been known at least since 2011 but development has been moving slowly and quietly up until now. Clearly things have progressed and with Gordon-Levitt now on board to play Petit things should be moving forward quickly.... |
BREAKING: Daniel Espinosa For ASSASSIN'S CREED? Posted: 22 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST Has the upcoming big screen adaptation of Assassin's Creed found its director? Though nothing has firmed up just yet there is persistent talk that the film's producers and backer 20th Century Fox have zeroed in on Swedish director Daniel Espinosa to take the helm. Espinosa originally burst on to the Hollywood radar with his 2010 Swedish action thriller Snabba Cash (Easy Money), a massive international hit which led to Espinosa taking the helm of Ryan Reynolds / Denzel Washington hit Safe House while also launching its Swedish star Joel Kinnaman - now known for the US version of The Killing and soon to be on screens as the lead in RoboCop - to Hollywood stardom.Currently scheduled for 2015 release Assassin's Creed should be gearing up... |
Destroy All Monsters: Bromance On Baker Street Posted: 22 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST Early in "The Empty Hearse," the generally outstanding third-season premiere of the BBC's Sherlock series, John Watson (Martin Freeman) must explain at length to Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs, who has the best name on television) that he and the "late" Sherlock Holmes were not, in fact, lovers. "The Empty Hearse" is delightfully loaded-to-overflowing with metatextual jabs at the pop cultural conversation around Sherlock, and the nudge-nudge-wink-wink nature of Sherlock and John's all-boy living conditions was not, of course, immune. (Read Todd's full review of "The Empty Hearse" here, and if you're just catching up with the series in its domestic run here in North America, beware of minor spoilers for Season Three below.) Along the lines of sexuality on Sherlock, "The Empty Hearse" ran the... |
Posted: 22 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST US-born director Arvin Chen had a festival hit with his Taiwanese-made 2010 debut, Au Revoir Taipei. Chen's follow up, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? is the warm-hearted story of a husband and father at odds with the truth of himself and how his long-denied feelings will affect those around him. The Lady Miz Diva: Where did the idea for WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW? come from?Arvin Chen: I knew that I wanted to make a film about families. I had seen a lot of Japanese films that dealt with families and what makes a family, and I wanted to put my own twist on that. How it turned into a story about this man coming out started with conversations with a gay friend... |
