Review: I, FRANKENSTEIN Makes An Apocalyptic Battle Look Like a Rainbow of Fireworks Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:02 PM PST Oooh, death looks so pretty! Demons drool, gargoyles rule! Stuart Beattie, who made his directorial debut with 2010's Tomorrow, When the War Began, delivers what amounts to a simplistic, spiritual sequel to that film, even though he has stepped over into an extension of the Underworld franchise. Having only seen Beattie's first film a few hours before, it made for a very strange, yet familiar sensation. At the same time, I, Frankenstein looks and feels very much like a cousin to the Underworld series, which was also first dreamed up by Kevin Grevioux. (He created the graphic novel that serves as the source material and is credited for the screen story with Beattie.) Instead of vampires vs. werewolves fighting a centuries-long secret war that will... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Pissing In The Punch Bowl At The 2014 Sundance Film Festival Part 3: Let The Bodies Hit The Floor Posted: 23 Jan 2014 04:00 PM PST TAKEN FROM THE JOURNALS OF UZI SILVERSTEINCHAPTER 7: DUMB AND DUMBER. I've been tailing Craig Christodoulou for three days, waiting for the right chance to catch him off guard without any witnesses around. Maybe he is the anti Christ. Maybe he isn't. The truth is that I feel kind of bad for the kid. As far as I can tell, he's just another hopeful geek who swimming in the shark tank. But he immediately sank to the bottom and as far as the sharks can tell, he's not even worth taking a nibble at. The bleeding wounds he's trying to stop came from his brush against the coral reef on his way down. I've watched him get rejected from just about every screening and party... Sundance Speed Dating with... FISHING WITHOUT NETS Director Cutter Hodierne and Lead Abdikani Muktar Posted: 23 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST Cutter Hodierne was at Sundance the first time in 2012, with his short of the same name that took home the Grand Jury Prize. This year, he's brought the feature-length version of a story about hardship, hard choices, family and hope and despair. That's a lot of emotion packed into one movie, but 24-year-old lead and first-time actor Abdikani Maktar (who's life the story is loosely based off of) carries the load well. And Hodierne is able to give Sundance audiences a deeper look into pirating from the pirates perspective.Twitch had to Speed Date them separately...Twitch: At what age did you know you wanted to be a director?Cutter Hodierne: When I was 14 or 15, I started making videos with my friends just for fun... It stops right before you know Caan is going to lay a beat down on the guy! Too bad for him. The two follow a trail of high-tech intrigue that leads them to his daughter's former boss (James Caan), a... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
NYC Happenings: The Rare And Dazzling HIMATSURI At Japan Society's Donald Richie Tribute Posted: 23 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST As the extensive Donald Richie tribute series continues at Japan Society, this might be a good time to mention that while the late critic helped popularize the canon daddies of Japanese film in the West--Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi--he was hardly in the business of propping up an easily digestible status quo. More often than not, Richie actively championed lesser known filmmakers and their more obscure, even controversial, work.Yanagimachi Mitsuo's Himatsuri ("Fire Festival") is the perfect case in point. With subtitles translated in part by Richie himself, this is the kind of film--rarely shown in repertory (at least in New York) and not available on R1 DVD--that more than deserves some attention. Simply on the level of storytelling it's often dazzling, with nearly every scene impactful, either... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Trailer for OCULUS Gives Chilling Reflections. Literally. Posted: 23 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST As a child, I had an intense fear of mirrors and would cover up the one in my bedroom every night (maybe I read C.S. Lewis' Through the Looking Glass a few too many times). So the new trailer for Mike Flannigan's film Oculus most definitely gives me the creeps. As does the brilliant poster. A highlight of TIFF this past fall, Twitch critic Jason Gorber calls it "a slow burn film with a deliciously creepy mood, yet at the same time it remains exhilarating throughout."Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Sundance 2014 Review: THE RAID 2 Sets a New High Point for Violent Action Cinema Posted: 23 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST It was no hyperbole when we called The Raid: Redemption "the best action movie in decades." That film redefined martial arts cinema for the 21st century and announced Gareth Evans as one of the most exciting young directors working today. So it has been a tense two-and-then-some years waiting for a follow-up from Evans. Would taking the action outside of the lone building keep up the first film's wicked pace? Could a sequel replicate the form of the first film without feeling repetitive? Did Evans have the skills to tell a much broader story? Was it even possible to top the bone-crunching action of The Raid: Redemption? The answer to all of these questions is a resounding, "Fuck YES!" The Raid 2 is a... Exclusive: BLACK OUT Coming Soon, America. Watch Trailer To Learn Why That's A Good Thing. Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST The U.S. will soon experience a black out, and that's a very good thing. Arne Toonen's Black Out is a darkly comic Dutch film that quickly asserts its own personality in a smart and jolting manner. Here's the official synopsis: On the morning before his wedding, retired criminal Jos (Raymond Thiry) wakes up next to a murdered man with no memory of the previous night or how he and the body got there. Jos soon discovers that a group of gangsters have pinned him as the lone suspect in the theft of 20 kilos of cocaine...and he's got 24 hours to get it back, or the life of his bride will be in serious danger. Now Jos has no choice but to creep back into... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Sundance 2014 Review: MEMPHIS Is A Truly Mesmerizing Meditation On The American South Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST Dusk. A blue summer day ending on a worn and warm boulevard. The pin prick glow of street lamps dazzle in the distance. A figure lumbers down the block. A hat tipped to one side, he is lost in thought. A walker. A dreamer. A dream walker. This is musician Willis Earl Beal. The city he wanders is Memphis: a relict of American folklore, dogged, dilapidated, and so full of life. Life that is quiet and cracked. Life young and old. So much life the summer doesn't know what to do with it all. And so the breeze just blows through the trees, and Willis walks on. Tim Sutton's second feature Memphis is that rare and soulful film that causes one to remember why... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Exclusive Clip From VIKINGDOM: Watch Vikings Do What They Do Best Posted: 23 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST If there is one thing that Vikings have absolutely no tolerance for, it has to be men in tunics, as this clip from Vikingdom clearly demonstrates. If you are wearing a tunic, then sadly you are a dead man. The equation is simple. The less clothes you wear, the more deadly and efficient you are at killing. Must be a freedom of movement thing. Or, in the case of Natassia Malthe and her whip, that is simply... a good thing. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. ... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Final Trailer For Emilio Portes' EL CRIMEN DEL CÁCARO GUMARO: TV Azteca And Televisa Invade Mexican Cinema Posted: 23 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST Holy cow. Pastorela's Emilio Portes goes against Cannes winner Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light, specifically) and "artsy" slow cinema in the final trailer for El Crimen del Cácaro Gumaro, the upcoming Mexican comedy that will most likely be a commercial success. But if the trailer is to be believed, Portes is about to face a massive critical failure. In El Crimen del Cácaro Gumaro (the title is, by the way, an obvious joke on The Crime of Father Amaro), a projectionist dies and one of his sons (Gumaro, played by Carlos Corona) inherits the old movie theater in a small town. With the help of the municipal president (played by famous Mexican television comedian Andrés Bustamante), Gumaro will eventually host an international film festival with movies of... Jim Mickle Finds It Is COLD IN JULY With IFC Films Posted: 23 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST News out of Park City today is that one of our favorite directors, Jim Mickle (We Are What We Are and Stakeland), will see IFC Films release his latest film Cold In July this summer. IFC bought the North American rights for the thriller adapted from the novel by Joe R. Lansdale (one of my favorite authors, by the way) and plans to release the film theatrically and on VOD. Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films says: "Jim Mickle is a major talent who has just delivered his best film yet and IFC Films could not be more excited to bring it to the large audience it so richly deserves." Director Jim Mickle added, "Our whole team is ecstatic to be partnering with IFC Films. This... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Review: Godfrey Reggio's VISITORS, A Gorgeous Visual Tone Poem Posted: 23 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST Koyaanisqatsi (1982), a genre-defining, landmark film that features stunning time-lapse photography and a hypnotic score by Philip Glass, expanded the boundaries of film. It garnered a cult following and spawned countless imitators in the commercial, documentary and narrative film worlds (most recently, Samsara). Its director, Godfrey Reggio, followed it with Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002) to complete the long intended trilogy.Reggio insists his films are not experimental, but rather, experiential. He asserts this notion again with Visitors, his first new film in more than ten years. It's a visual tone poem presented in stunning monochrome 4K. Like his previous -qatsi trilogy, the 'life unbalanced' theme is still present. But consisting of only 74 shots, the film is a much more graceful, subtle, abstract experience. As... Review: STRANGER BY THE LAKE Explores An Uncanny Attraction Posted: 23 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST It is hard to know exactly where to begin when it comes to discussing Alain Guiraudie's psychosexual thriller Stranger by the Lake. This controversial film was strangely given an R18+ rating and uncut in more conservative places like Australia. However, despite its high level of sexual content, there is much more to ponder. It is summer in France; a mysterious but beautiful spot in the woods hides a stunning lake. A makeshift car park a few meters away reveals a new arrival driving to what will be his usual routine. His name is Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps) and he is looking for love, lust and passion. It is quickly revealed that this serene spot is used as a cruising locale, where gay men of varying shape,... Review: GLORIA, A Joyful, Tragi-Comic Reminder To Keep On Truckin' Posted: 23 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST Gloria is a hilarious, honest Chilean character study of a fairly normal woman. By "fairly normal," however, I don't mean boring, because, if you really dig deep with people, no one is actually boring, despite what movies would sometimes lead us to believe. The titular protagonist of Gloria certainly has her share of problems -- to start with, she's fifty-eight and divorced, her daughter is pregnant and about to move to Sweden with her boyfriend, who's a bit of a doofus, and her upstairs neighbor is having constant freak outs that wake her up in the middle of the night. But you know what? Gloria is a smart, strong, well-adjusted human being and she's not knocked down so easily. And, at the halfway point or... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
