Review: COLD COMES THE NIGHT Elevates Familiar Genre Elements With Fine Performances And Skillful Execution

In 2009, writer-director Tze Chun garnered much acclaim with his debut feature Children of Invention, a semi-autobiographical film about a single mother and her two children struggling to make ends meet in suburban Boston. At first glance, Chun's follow-up, the new film Cold Comes the Night, would seem to be a radical departure; this is very much a genre piece, with the familiar elements of a duffel bag full of cash, scary men with guns, dirty cops, and such. A closer look, however, reveals that. thematically, the two films have much in common. Both films are dramatically fueled by the desperation of their single mom protagonists, who are in great need of money to give themselves and their children a better life. Also, both films are...

The Devil Hides In The Jungle In Teaser Trailer for LA CARA DEL DIABLO

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST

Horror is a genre which has never really caught on with Peruvian filmmakers, despite its popularity with audiences; regional films are a huge exception, but they've always had obstacles to overcome in reaching a mass audience. All this changed with the 2013 release of Cementerio General, a found footage fright flick which became the second highest grossing local film for the year. This has opened the door for many directors to try their hand at horror pictures. One of them is Frank PĂ©rez-Garland, who wrapped filming on his latest, La Cara del Diablo ("Face of the Devil") a few months ago. In it, a group of teenagers arrive at a hostel located in the jungle for a vacation, only to fall prey to evil local...

Poetry And Misery: The Early Works Of Satyajit Ray At The Austrian Filmmuseum

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

From December 4 to January 8, the Austrian Filmmuseum presented a retrospective of the early works by famous Indian director Satyajit Ray. Not only did it show a complete overview of Ray's work from 1955 to 1965, but also some of the most spectacular works in the history of world cinema that were shot in India. I got completely lost inside the cinema and once again the strange force of the screen has taken me on a trip to different places, different feelings and different times. One of the most famous films shown was Jean Renoir's The River, a film that many filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese cite as one of their favorite films ever. Seeing this colorful cinematic innocence projected on film was not...

Review: COMMUNITY S5EP03, "Basic Intergluteal Numismatics" Gets Cheeky With A Fincher-esque Procedural

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Back in the day, say late 2007 or early 2008, movie audiences, critics and those people that give out awards were talking about two particular American films that had struck accord at the cinema: There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. These were game changers, classics in the making, un grande cinema. But there was another film a smaller, if no less vocal group was championing: David Fincher's Zodiac. Seems as if the writing staff of Community was a part of that group (as was I). Something terrifying stalks the halls of Greendale. Someone who has cast a black net of fear through this humble community college before. The ass crack bandit, the bringer of change (because he slips quarters down people's...

Review: LONE SURVIVOR Offers An Intense, Visceral Depiction Of The War Experience

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

Samuel Fuller, who directed some of the best war movies ever made, and who was a combat veteran himself, famously stated, "To make a real war movie would be to fire at the audience from behind a screen." Peter Berg's latest film, Lone Survivor, of course, stops well short of this hypothetical method of bringing the brutal realities of war home to the audience. However, writer-director Berg seems to have taken the ethos behind Fuller's statement deeply to heart in his presentation of warfare. Lone Survivor is based on the memoir of the same name by Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of the ill-fated Navy SEAL "Operation Red Wings" military mission in Afghanistan that claimed the lives of 19 U.S. soldiers in June 2005. More than any...

THE SIMPSONS Offer A Tribute To Miyazaki-San And Studio Ghibli

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

Earlier this television season, it was Guillermo del Toro doing a loving Where's Waldo of his images in an introduction for The Simpsons. Now, in light of Miyazaki Hayao retiring after The Wind Rises, the fine folks at Fox have crafted a surprisingly heartfelt tribute to the Japanese master, with the best Hisaishi Jo impressive I've ever heard.  The Cat Bus, No Face, Porco, Haku, Kiki, Kodama Spirits and Apu's Moving Kwik-E-Mart are all here. Enjoy....
