Review: Van Damme Goes Violently Vegan In ENEMIES CLOSER Posted: 25 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST Jean Claude Van Damme is gleefully deranged in Peter Hyams' no-frills Friday night beat-em up, in which a park ranger and vengeful ex-con form an uneasy alliance against a gang of marauding mercenaries on the Canadian border. The last decade has been a barren period for director Peter Hyams, who was responsible for the likes of Outland, 2010 and Schwarzenengger's End Of Days, as well as the superior Van Damme vehicles Time Cop and Sudden Death. Recent years have seen Hyams' son John take up the baton and score impressive hits in the DTV action market, most notably helming Van Damme in the two most recent Universal Soldier sequels. Here John serves as editor for his father, while Van Damme delivers his best performance since Mabrouk El Mechri's... |
Posted: 25 Jan 2014 08:30 PM PST Comedy power couple Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman hosted the Sundance awards ceremony Saturday night in Park City. For those in the audience, and watching at home via streaming, it was a crash course in how to keep these types of things short and sweet, while giving the winners their due.And what an eclectic bunch of winners it was. If the 2014 edition of Sundance will go down for anything it will probably be the fact that there were nary a standout, big buzz film in any category, but a lot of niche gems, or important indie director's new works only making mild waves. But one thing was for sure, both audiences and the jury loved Whiplash. Damien Chazelle's story about a jazz drummer and... |
Slamdance 2014: This Clip From ROVER Will Tell You How To "Tone It Down" In Space Posted: 25 Jan 2014 05:30 PM PST Slamdance is known for being totally DIY. And this clip from Tony Blahd's Rover (or Beyond Human: The Venusian Future and the Return of the Next Level) backs that up wholeheartedly. A clueless film crew (who also happen to be a part of a Scientology like cult) on a shoestring budget attempt (big emphasis on that word) to film a biopic about their glorious leader. Remember kids, if you're going to be in a cult and make a movie, you'll definitely want to hire a serious director. One who knows when to tone things down. Way down.More weirdness from Rover at their website. ... |
Sundance Speed Dating with... HELLION Writer/Director Kat Candler Posted: 25 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST Austin-based filmmaker Kat Candler's got a sweet spot for kids. (That sounds creepy, but I assure you it's not.) Many of her films, including her first feature Jumping Off Bridges, deal in the emotional space of children and what it means to be young -- all the bad things and all the good things included. Her short-turned-feature Hellion has captured Sundance crowds and Twitch sat down during her very busy Park City stay to dig a little deeper in.Twitch: At what age did you know you wanted to be a writer/director?Kat Candler: I knew I wanted to direct when I was in college for creative writing. I had a friend that I worked at a movie theater with and was helping with her thesis film at FSU.... |
Sundance 2014: IFC Midnight Nabs Aussie Horror THE BABADOOK Posted: 25 Jan 2014 01:30 PM PST No doubt a high point for many of us Twitchers at Sundance, Jennifer Kent's storybook monster turned real monster tale The Babadook also caught on with much of the Park City audience. Which means it was only going to be a very, very short matter of time before the film got distribution. And so it is that IFC Midnight has picked up Kent's debut for the U.S. and Latin America. No word on when the film will hit screens big and small, but let's just assume it'll be later this year.In the meantime, check out Todd's favorable review right here.PARK CITY, UTAH (January 25, 2014) - IFC Midnight announced today from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival that the company is acquiring U.S. and Latin American... |

Watch The Final Trailer For THE MONKEY KING Posted: 25 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST Yesterday saw the unveiling of the "Ultimate" trailer for Cheang Pou Soi's fantasy event film The Monkey King with action actor/director Donnie Yen as the title character caught in the middle of an epic battle between the Jade Emperor from Heaven, played by Chow Yun-Fat and the Buffalo Demon King from Hell, played by Aaron Kwok. Sundance 2014 Review: KILLERS Is A Brilliant Rumination On Our Violent Ways Posted: 25 Jan 2014 11:10 AM PST Killers, the latest from by Timothy Tjahjanto and Kimo Stomboel (aka, "The Mo Brothers"), is many things. It is a dark, stylish, somber, almost post-modern take on genre tropes. It is elegantly presented with impressive performances. It is a horrific film with few cheap thrills, toying with audience expectations throughout. In many ways it is a haunting, unsettling experience. What it is not, however, is a Midnight Film.Normally, this wouldn't matter much, but a film like Killers requires a far more "awake" audience to appreciate what it's doing, and slating it in along with more adrenaline-packed films does it an injustice. The first twenty minutes of film develop at an almost glacial pace; a deliberate tease to the audience for what's to come. Slow camera movement... |
