Mercedes (Mayella Lloclla) is an orphan who comes to work as a maid for the lonely, widowed Silvia (Vanessa Saba), who lives all by herself in a huge, rundown house. While there, she catches the eye of Jaime (Manuel Gold, an actor known for comedic roles, here playing it mostly straight), a backpacker earning money as a handyman. Unknown to both of them, however, is that the whole thing is a plan hatched by Silvia to get Mercedes pregnant and claim her baby as her own, at all costs. That's the plot behind El Vientre, the second film from Daniel Rodríguez Risco, after 2008 drama The Watercolorist. It's the first Peruvian release of the year and also this country's first attempt at a psychological thriller. Genre...

Berlinale 2014 Review: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Looks Spectacular, But Story Fails

Posted: 14 Feb 2014 02:30 PM PST

In the 21st century, how is one to present a fairy tale? There are stories ripe with opportunity to create great visual, frequently with lots of action, but the stereotyping, themes, and gender representation can be a bit tricky in today's more liberated culture. A story such as Beauty and the Beast, with a heroine who reluctantly sacrifices herself to beast to save her family, only to fall in love with said beast, isn't necessarily a role model. Still, there is opportunity to adjust. Sadly, Christophe Gans and co-writer Sandra Vo-Ahn sacrifice story for visual spectacle. The story is presented quite clearly as a fairy tale, beginning with a mother telling her two children the story (and we are reminded of their presence at regular intervals)....

Watch The Exclusive First Teaser For Bruce McDonald's THE HUSBAND

Posted: 14 Feb 2014 02:10 PM PST

There is, shall we say, a very particular sort of ironic chuckle that I allow myself whenever the topic of Bruce McDonald's The Husband comes up. For as outlandish as the concept may seem to some ... well, let's just say it's not, shall we? Canada's reigning king of the indie mavericks returns here with a dark comedy exploring the other side of one of those teacher-student sex scandals that pop up in the paper from time to time and with the film beginning its public release March 14th at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, we're proud to launch the first teaser - the first in an extensive series of teasers that should be popping up all over the place now - here at Twitch.Maxwell McCabe-Lokos,...

Just In Time For Valentine's Day: A Family-Friendly NYMPHOMANIAC: VOLUME I Trailer!

Posted: 14 Feb 2014 10:00 AM PST

"What are you rebelling against?" "Love."Yes, it's too bad that couples across the United States can't celebrate Valentine's Day huddled together in a theater, holding each other tight as Lars Von Trier guides them on an erotic cinema odyssey. But the good folks at Magnolia Pictures have nonetheless gifted us with a treat that trumps all of the flowers, cards and other hallmarks of this celebration of love and consumerism: a new, mostly SFW trailer for Nymphomaniac: Volume I. It is, for the most part, a more polite version of the previous trailer, with the Ramstein still intact, so those concerned about nudity-spoilers can relax and enjoy! Part one will open in theaters on March 21, 2014 and will go on demand early on March 6 for late-night,...

The Stack: Twilight Time Releases, Indie Horror LORD OF TEARS, THE KILLING FIELDS, And More

Posted: 14 Feb 2014 06:00 AM PST

Welcome Back to The Stack. I'm Dave Canfield, here to help guide you through the last few weeks of DVD and Blu-ray releases. All sorts of stuff has come across my path since I last did an episode and this is the stuff I'm most excited about. First the good folks at Twilight Time sent along some discs. If you don't know about Twilight Time you should. They do Blu-ray debuts in limited quantities (usually about 3,000) of classic, unavailable or unfairly forgotten films. Their releases aren't 4k or anything but they are always a visual upgrade from whatever has been available before and Twilight Time has a way of finding things that have sadly fallen through the cracks. Bell, Book and Candle (1958), My Cousin...
