AMISS: Check The Trailer For A Different Sort Of Korean Indie

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 09:30 AM PST

Created on a tiny budget over the past two years, dark thriller Amiss is a different sort of Korean indie. Directed by Raoul Dyssell & William Sonbuchner the film is creation of a group of expats and local Koreans working together to capture a rather different picture of Korea than what we normally see on screen. The sudden suicide of Anna Choi (Kimberley M. Buxton), a young Korean woman, forces her grief-stricken father (Allan Choi), a powerful, corrupt man, to seek retribution against those responsible for pushing her over the edge. He seeks out the ones with whom she was closely involved with in the short time leading up to her death: her boyfriend (Daniel Kennedy), her psychologist (Lauren Ash-Morgan) and a stranger (Quinn Knox) who...

Pretty Packaging: Take A Closer Look At The UK Release Of PERFECT BLUE

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PST

(Never judge someone with "multiple personality disorder" by her cover, or her other cover!) Josh just reviewed the new Blu-ray release of Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue, and did a wonderful job describing its contents. But you might wonder what the packaging looks like, especially since the Japanese Limited Edition Blu-ray is one of the most kick-ass releases EVER in that regard, despite being released over seven years ago. But that edition, out-of-print for years already, has always been very expensive, and didn't have any English dub or subs. Unlike this new British release by Anime Ltd. which is available for a reasonable price, and has English subs-and-a-dub. So what does the UK Anime Ltd. release look like? Quite nice, actually, and it uses artwork which...

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PST

Icelandic filmmaker Logi Hilmarsson first popped up on our radar when his short film Þygdarafl (Gravity) played at the Tribeca Film Festival. Hilmarsson has just sent word that he has a new project in the works, a television miniseries called Grillingur. While he is waiting for all the pieces to fall into place so they can begin filming he has sent along the pitch trailer that got the production a contract with Iceland's largest television station. In it you will see Damon Younger who played the psychotic Bruno in the thriller Black's Game. I have agreed to withhold any great amount of detail about the plot for now but Hilmarsson was willing to share this much...This Cryptic tease from Logi Hilmarsson's new project, Grillingur, promises metaphysical mysteries,...

Review: AMBASSADA Has An Extremely Poor Sense Of Humor

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PST

Apparently, after all those magnificent years of creating hilarious, crowd-pleasing comedies Juliusz Machulski (Vabank, Sexmission, Kiler) has finally lost his comedic touch. His oeuvre is like an almost never-ending bag of laugh-inducing creations and a source of great joy, mostly for all fellow compatriots who tried to escape from the harsh reality of People's Republic of Poland by plunging into an expertly designed world filled with timeless gags, wacky slapstick and spot-on dialogue. Though still far from retiring (at least everyone hopes so), Machulski and his creative vision seem to be growing further and further apart since 2004, a year in which he gave the world his last great film, Vinci.AmbaSSada (EmbaSSy, a title which refers to Nazi Party's elite military unit Schutzstaffel), Machulski's latest...

New To Netflix: Iceland, Oscars, Palme d'Or Winners, Cronenberg, And Cannibals

Posted: 03 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PST

Have you finished binge-viewing House of Cards yet? This week's entry of New To Netflix is the usual grab-bag of independent and foreign fare, speckled award winners, some cult Canadian stuff, and a couple of remakes. We start at the 2013 Cannes Palme D'Or award winner with more run time than hyped lesbian sex, and we end on a workmanlike biopic with some exceptional acting that ended up bagging a few Academy Awards in 2005. Have at it....
