MINERS SHOT DOWN: South African Mining Massacre Doc Premieres At One World Film Festival Posted: 05 Mar 2014 01:30 AM PST Renowned South African documentary producer and director, Rehad Desai, has premiered his second feature, Miners Shot Down, at the 2014 One World Film Festival in Prague. The film revisits events surrounding the August 2012 Marikana mine massacre, during which police opened fire on protesting miners, killing 30. The event shocked South Africa and the world, hearkening back to violence seen during the country's dark history of Apartheid, and raising troubling questions about state power and corporate exploitation. The film retraces events chronologically, from the build up of tensions to the tragic denouement. Unedited news footage, testimonials and interviews combine to reveal a story quite different from that seen during the events, making this is an important contribution to what may well prove a watershed moment in... |

It's Official! EXPENDABLES 3's Patrick Hughes To Direct Screen Gem's Remake Of THE RAID: REDEMPTION Posted: 04 Mar 2014 08:15 PM PST It has been running around the rumor mill for a while now. Today Sony/Screen Gems crossed the T's and dotted the I's and Patrick Hughes, director of the upcoming The Expendables 3 and the terrific Red Hill, is officially signed on to direct their remake of Gareth Huw Evans' international action hit, The Raid: Redemption. The new script was written by Out of the Furnace scribe Brad Inglesby. Original Raid producers XYZ Films (this includes our lord and master, Todd Brown) will produce this new film. Evans is on board as an executive producer. And the original fight choreographers and Evans regulars, Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, will help bring the pain to Hughes' film. Greatness. STAGE FRIGHT Trailer Mixes Music, Mirth, And Bloody Madness Posted: 04 Mar 2014 06:10 PM PST Nothing in life is guaranteed, but from the first trailer for Jerome Sable's Stage Fright, I am willing to predict that he has absolutely nailed a great horror-comedy musical. Sable made the short The Legend of Beaver Dam several years ago, a film that absolutely floored me because it captured the spooky spirit of a campfire tale and then infused it with a very funny musical twist. Official synopsis-wise, Stage Fright follows up in that same spirit: Starry-eyed teenager Camilla Swanson wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a Broadway diva, but she's stuck working in the kitchen of a snobby performing arts camp. Determined to change her destiny, she sneaks in to audition for the summer showcase and lands a lead role... |

Pressured by his superior (Sean Astin) into using harsh techniques on a seemingly innocent detainee (Omid Abtahi), the seductive allure of war quickly turns to a haunting reality that threatens to break him. Based on the true events that shocked the world in 2004.... |

In anticipation of its debut, a teaser trailer has dropped to give you a taste of what is in store. Starry Eyes tells the story of Sarah Walker, a determined and desperate actor who would do anything to land her first big role. Unfortunately this leaves her prey to a satanic cult who has been operating as Hollywood's gatekeepers since the Golden Age. They have the power to make her a star, but it comes at a terrible price. What follows is an occult tale of paranoia and possession that explores themes of transformation, body horror and a woman... |
Exclusive OTHER MONTHS Clip: The Rabbit in the Basement Posted: 04 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PST Set to make its world premiere at SXSW this coming weekend, Nick Singer's Other Months tackles a familiar subject, but promises to shake things up a bit. Here's the description by the festival: Nash spends a year drawing into himself, becoming troubled by his work and disillusioned with his romantic prospects -- until a return home forces him to confront his inertia. Through pulsing dance floors, flooded basements, and strangers' embraces, Other Months takes the audience on Nash's journey of restraint and release. A character study, a visual poem, a headspace, and a feature film, Other Months is broken into three parts, each section correlating to a different time of year in tone, setting, and theme. Moving to the beat of its images as much... |

Hooray For Hollywood! New Red Carpets and Old White People Posted: 04 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PST The SWAT snipers are climbing down from the Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum roof, traffic is resuming its normal sluggish flow at Hollywood and Highland (the 25-foot anti-blast wall now deconstructed) and soft sobbing and the repeated mantra of "It was an honor to be nominated" is wafting gently down from the hills above Sunset Boulevard. It's springtime in Hollywood and all is right with the world. Please forgive me if I seem a little giddy today. See, today is my FAVORITE day of the movie-making year and it isn't because we "finally" know who won the Oscar for this or that -- it's because "award" season is finally over (at least until the shot-across-the-bow of Cannes in May, but let me enjoy... |
Exclusive Clip From THE VISITOR: You'll Need Seat Belts to Watch It, Says Lance Henriksen Posted: 04 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PST Available today on Blu-ray and DVD, The Visitor is one of the most delightfully weird movies I've ever seen. And, in an exclusive clip, the great Lance Henriksen confirms one of my suspicions. In my review, I commented: "I wonder how well any of the Italian crew spoke / understood English. This was the time period [1979] when Italian productions cobbled together cast members with name recognition from across North America and Europe, and perhaps that would help explain why so much of the story appears to have been lost in translation." Henriksen addresses that point, as well as his general approach to the film in the clip below. (I won't spoil it for you.) As to the movie itself, well, plot summaries are besides... |
