Hey London! Zipangu Fest Returns With FRANK CHICKENS, GOOD WIFE And More!

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 03:04 AM PDT

Arguably the most unique and eclectic of film festivals in the UK to throw its focus on Japanese cinema, Zipangu Fest returns this 1st June, for an evening of weird and wonderful cinematic delights, curated and hosted by acclaimed Japanese film scholar and all-round good egg, Jasper Sharp. This year's festival focuses its attentions on eccentric 80s pop-punk collective, Frank Chickens, fronted by Katsuko Hohki, who will be in attendance to present a screening of Robert Makin and Ollie Verschoyle's documentary Frank Chickens: The Movie. Other announced titles for the evening include Kim Longinotto's The Good Wife of Tokyo from 1993.I was lucky enough to attend Zipangu Fest in 2012 and it proved an incredible celebratory experience of the sheer diversity of Japanese Cinema. Moving away...

Tribeca 2014 Interview: Noah Buschel's GLASS CHIN

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

As the music starts and the first scene opens up in Noah Buschel's Glass Chin, you may think you're about to watch the newest version of Rocky what with the running boxer at dawn, dramatic theme score and all. The story, however, is something altogether otherworldly and yet at the same time realistic in its aesthetic, bringing you down a road of lost morality and forgotten chances with some terrific performances by co-stars Marin Ireland and Billy Crudup. At the premiere party I was able to catch up with Buschel briefly and cram a few questions in about his unique style of shooting and why his leading man, Corey Stoll (House of Cards) is the 'dude' of the moment.Twitch: You have a very stylized, specific voice for storytelling....

First Images From Kim Ki-duk 'Trauma Film' ONE ON ONE

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

When writing about Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk's upcoming One On One recently HanCinema referred to the picture as a 'trauma film'. And while I can't be certain whether they're quoting the director himself on that front or if they picked up the phrase from somewhere else it certainly seems to be an apt description for a great deal of Kim's work, particularly of a film inspired by such a strong sense of disgust with corruption in his own government that Kim says of his latest work, "If you don't feel murdered, then don't watch the movie."Yes, it's going to be another happy one.One On One is scheduled for a May release in Korea - meaning perhaps a selection in Directors Fortnight in Cannes? - and...

Crowdfund This! BRAINGASM And ASMR

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 11:30 AM PDT

Who doesn't want a pleasurable tingling sensation to light up their brain?  The term "autonomous sensory meridian response" (ASMR) is marked by a pleasurable tingling sensation - a micro-platonic-orgasm - often felt in the head. This can be triggered by anything from getting a haircut, hearing a paint brush against canvas, to listening to someone whisper. Not everyone feels it, but some of the lucky ones have joined together to create a social media movement that's changing lives.Lindsay Ragone's doc on the subject - and any movement that chooses the afro haired PBS painter Bob Ross as their unofficial patron saint is good in my book - traces the history of the online community that has sprung up spontaneously over the past few years on...

Check Out The Trailer For BEYOND: The First Horror Film Ever From Kyrgyzstan

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Who's up for a bit of horror from Central Asia? Well, you've got it with the first trailer for Beyond (По ту сторону), the first ever horror film from Kyrgyzstan. As has been the case with first horror efforts from many non-traditional film cultures in recent years - because the format is cheap - this one is very much of the found footage variety and while the trailer does not include English subtitles they're not particularly necessary to understand what's going on. Take a look below....

Jeremy Saulnier And Macon Blair Talk BLUE RUIN

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

It was back in 2007 that we first came across the creative duo of writer-director Jeremy Saulnier and actor Macon Blair. The occasion at the time was Murder Party, a horror comedy that won raves on the festival circuit before receiving a modest US release. It won the pair some fans, to be sure, and marked them as a duo to keep an eye on but even the most optimistic reactions could not possibly have anticipated what was coming next. Which is probably a good thing, because they had to wait a long time to get it.Jump forward six years to 2013. Saulnier and Blair have reteamed for their second collaboration, Blue Ruin. And they're going to Cannes, where the film premiered in the Director's...

Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks TRANSCENDENCE

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 08:30 AM PDT

We hit a bit of a nadir with new releases this week, as Transcendence proves something of a flop, a throwback film that misfires on pretty much every level. As I described in my review, it's "more than a Lawnmower Man redux, mowing its way through maudlin metaphysics and moral manure."Video embedded below...

Review: GAME OF THRONES S4E03, BREAKER OF CHAINS (Or, This Is How Things Work)

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Twitch continues with its ongoing series of recap / reviews of HBO's Game Of Thrones, written from the perspective of someone who has made the deliberate choice not to read the books so he can experience the series cold. Feedback is, of course, always welcome and encouraged but please respect the perspective of the writer and other readers unfamiliar with the source novels and limit discussions to the events that have unfolded on screen thus far and do not roam ahead....

Tribeca 2014 Interview: Chris Messina Goes Behind the Camera for ALEX OF VENICE

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Chris Messina is nothing like Dr. Danny Castellano, the typical gruff New Yorker with a chip on his shoulder from The Mindy Project. Much to the contrary, Messina is warm, inviting and genuinely wants to have a discussion about his first film as director, Alex of Venice, which premiered this week in New York. Of course, there's still that New Yorker about him both in accent and word choice, but it only adds to his charm.Alex of Venice is a quiet vraisemblance about a workaholic environmental attorney, Alex, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is forced to reinvent herself after her husband (Messina) - the only man she's ever had sex with and bore a child for at 19 - ups and leaves the family....
