It's A Mud Slinging Prison Brawl In A New Clip From THE RAID 2 Posted: 10 Apr 2014 03:00 AM PDT One more sleep! One more sleep! One more sleep until The Raid 2 opens wider across the U.S. and finally here in Canada! We do not know if anything is going to tide you over until then, but maybe, just maybe, this opening to the prison brawl scene may do the trick. You will have to go over to the Apple trailer site to find it. While mud is known to be good for your complexion I don't know if punches to the face are really that helpful. This is that part where we tell you that our lord and master Todd Brown is awesome and the World is indebted to him and the rest of the kids at XYZ Films for bringing us this ode to martial... |
First Time Fest 2014: Awards and Festival Reflections Posted: 09 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT First Time Fest, a film festival that celebrates and supports first time filmmakers, wrapped up its second edition on April 7 with a closing night awards ceremony held at 42West nightclub. During the festival, besides Josephine Decker's psychological horror film Butter on the Latch (read my review here), I was able to catch three other great features. Tommy Oliver's 1982, set in Philadelphia in the titular year at the onset of the crack epidemic, is a semi-autobiographical and emotionally moving film featuring a great central performance by Hill Harper. Harper plays a man struggling to raise his daughter while dealing with his wife's raging crack addiction, and the film itself has beautiful visual textures and a realistic-feeling sense of its time and place. Rok Bicek's Class Enemy,... |
The Apes Take Up Arms In New DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Images Posted: 09 Apr 2014 01:30 PM PDT Ten new images from Matt Reeves' upcoming Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes have arrived online and if there were any lingering questions about the quality of the VFX in the film - which there shouldn't be, really - these would very well resolve all of them. Because they look fantastic. And they have apes on horseback. And apes with firearms. These are good things.Picking up the story ten years following the previous film with Caesar asserting himself as leader of the apes while also raising a family while a small colony of humans struggles to survive. Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Kirk Acevedo, and Enrique Murciano play the human contingent with Andy Serkis reprising his role as Caesar. Check out the images... |

Return To Department Q With A Gorgeous Teaser For Mikkel Nørgaard's THE ABSENT ONE Posted: 09 Apr 2014 12:30 PM PDT Director Mikkel Nørgaard laid waste to the Danish box office - breaking a handful of records - with The Keeper Of Lost Causes, the first big screen adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen's Department Q crime novels. And so anticipation has been running rather high for the second installment, The Absent One (FASANDRÆBERNE). Nørgaard returns to the director's chair with stars Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares reprising the lead roles while Pilou Asbaek and David Dencik join the cast.In 1994 two young twins are found brutally murdered in a summer cottage. A number of clues points in the direction of a group of young upper class students from a nearby boarding school, but the case is closed as a local outsider pleads guilty and is convicted... |
Van Warmerdam's Dark Fable BORGMAN Gets A Suitably Dark US Trailer Posted: 09 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT Drafthouse Films are gearing up for a June release of Alex van Warmerdam's Cannes selected Borgman, a particular high point in a filmography filled with high points for the Dutch maverick.A dark suburban fable exploring the nature of evil in unexpected places, Borgman follows an enigmatic vagrant who enters the lives of an upper-class family and quickly unravels their carefully curated lifestyle. Charming and mysterious, Camiel Borgman seems almost otherworldly, and it isn't long before he has the wife, children and nanny under his spell in a calculated bid to take over their home life. However, his domestic assimilation takes a malevolent turn as his ultimate plan comes to bear, igniting a series of increasingly maddening and menacing events. This one is a great favorite in... |
Destroy All Monsters: Winter in the Captain's America Posted: 09 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT Spoilers follow for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Institutional paranoia may be the low-hanging fruit of the American blockbuster, but Captain America 2 exploits it well - even ingeniously, when the movie does reality one better by claiming that all of our online presence is being cobbled together, not into a giant database by which to drive ad sales, but rather into a HYDRA-designed algorithm that analyzes your social media data and decides whether or not you're going to be a terrorist someday. Bet you never thought of that when you posted your breakfast to your Facebook wall this morning! Captain America: The Winter Soldier is rather like America herself: there are a lot of guns and a lot of cars, and (underneath the aforementioned,... |

Tribeca 2014: Watch The Trailer For The Greatest (And Only) INTRAMURAL Sports Story. Posted: 09 Apr 2014 06:00 AM PDT Ah, intramural sports. Where even the doughiest of students can participate in not-quite-world-calls athletics and live the dream of being Lebron, Crosby or Manning. Andrew Disney's sports comedy Intramural will have its world premiere at Tribeca and we have a trailer to share with you. There comes a time in every fifth-year senior's life where they must either accept the impending 'real world' of jobs, marriage, and payment plans or shirk that responsibility in favor of playing the most glorious intramural football game your school probably doesn't really care to see. This full throttle and hilarious send-up of inspirational sports movies harnesses every cliché and overused trope to tell the greatest (and only) intramural sports story of all time. The film has an all-star cast including Nikki... |
Watch This First 'Clip' From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Posted: 09 Apr 2014 05:00 AM PDT MTV has just released a 'clip' from James Gunn's upcoming space adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. In this 'clip' we find Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), aka. Star Lord, in some temple doing an 'Indy' with an orb when he is caught by a Kree bounty hunter played by Djimon Hounsou. We are using the term 'clip' pretty loosely around this one because even though it is a little more extensive than what has been shown in the trailers up until now the beats have been tightened up and you just know you are not getting the full-on scene here. I have high hopes for this one. I do not think Marvel is going to swing and miss with this one. When I caught Winter Soldier last Thursday night... |
