STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Update: I Bent My Wookie

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 08:02 PM PDT

When we last chatted, there were few new rumours flying around, save for a sure shooting date. Hints have been dropped in the past about other "holy trilogy" characters making an appearance, and R2-D2 already seems all but confirmed.THR is reporting today that Peter "Chewbacca" Mayhew is to make another appearance on the big screen in the as-yet-to-be-titled Episode 7 (my vote's still on Revenge of the Hope).Again, not exactly shocking, but it does give credence to the thought of a certain Mr. Ford reprising his role as well. While we wait for official confirmation, why not read the extensive (and aptly named) Wookiepedia entry on the beast that Leia says she'd rather kiss (lies!), and let's take some time to enjoy some classic Chewie...

Chris O'Dowd's MOONE BOY Headed For The Big Screen!

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 02:30 PM PDT

Chris O'Dowd's Moone Boy is the greatest single reason why US residents should subscribe to Hulu. Created by, co-written by, and starring O'Dowd - who also directed the as yet unaired third series - Moone Boy is a quasi autobiographical tale of a young boy growing up in small town Ireland with his imaginary friend. It's utterly charming and absolutely hilarious stuff and with two series already aired in Ireland - the second of which is due to hit Hulu at the end of the month - and a third already in the can O'Dowd and his writing partner Nick Vincent Murphy are addressing a very simple question:What do you do with a show about a child and his imaginary friend when your young star...

Slick Trailers For Turkish Hitman Film PANZEHIR (ANTIDOTE)

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Though Turkish cinema is perhaps best known abroad for their arthouse dramas while local audiences tend to flock to broad comedies there's a long history of action cinema from Turkey as well, a history that has perhaps bubbled beneath the surface but has been there nonetheless. And writer-director Alper Çağlar is hoping to make a splash in that arena with his very slick looking Panzehir (Antidote). The story is a familiar one, revolving around a hitman who wants to retire taking revenge on his former employers when they choose to poison him rather than letting him out of the game, but the execution looks slick and engaging. Take a look at the teaser and full trailer below. English subtitles included on the full trailer....

New Extended Look At Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 12:30 PM PDT

I do not know what other film coming out this spring has me more excited than Gareth Edwards' Godzilla. And with this new 'Extended Look' popping up, all other contenders are pretenders as far as I am concerned. In this two and half minute trailer, some previous glimpses of story lines from earlier trailers get a little more fleshed out. And there is more harrowing and awesome footage to discover as well. But I am rambling on now. Have a look for yourselves. * Since writing this up, I've also found a 60 second spot titled 'Courage' and a 30 second spot title 'Whatever It Takes'. ...

Hong Kong 2014 Review: THAT DEMON WITHIN Has Problems Throughout

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Hong Kong's reigning champion of pyrotechnic mayhem continues to move outside of his comfort zone with the psychological crime drama That Demon Within, but the results fail to hit the mark as poor plotting, loose direction and an increasingly preposterous script do their best to undermine a spirited central performance from Daniel Wu.After a string of increasingly high octane action thrillers, Hong Kong's Dante Lam confounded and impressed critics and audiences alike last year with his heartfelt, character-driven MMA drama, Unbeatable. The film proved the biggest domestic hit of the year and won awards both at home and overseas, which many saw as the dawning of a new, more mature and substantial chapter in the director's ever-evolving career. That Demon Within clearly has its sights set...

Free Tickets: I Spy with My Little Eye a Free Chicago Area Screening of OCULUS!

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

I had the honor of hosting a special screening of Mike Flanagan's last film  Absentia back in 2011. I was thrilled. He was clearly an upcoming talent who knew his way around storytelling, camera and creating potent dread. Flash forward and I have a few tickets to a preview screening of his very well reviewed film Oculus, which offers a strong riff on the haunted mirror ghost story. Once the tickets are gone they are gone. The screening is this Wednesday night, April 9 in Chicago. Free? Then hit up this free screening. The only requirement is creating a free account with Relativity Screenings. From the producer of Insidious and Paranormal Activity comes Oculus, the story of a woman desperate to prove the existence of the supernatural and...

Trailer For Malaysian Found Footage Horror IA WUJUD Promises Scares

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 10:30 AM PDT

Yes, I know. The found footage thing is played out. People have been saying so pretty much from the moment that Blair Witch hit the screen. And yet they keep getting made and while the hit rate isn't great the reason they keep getting made is because when they work the format is still quite effective. And upcoming Malaysian effort Ia Wujud - which translates to It Exists - looks as though it could be a fairly solid little entry into the found footage canon. You know the setup by now ... it's a bunch of young people in a remote place doing things they really should know better than to do when things go wrong. But it's all in the execution so take a look...

Get Ready For German Fight Club With Ultra Stylish Trailer For STEREO

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Is director Maximilian Erlenwein aiming for a career as the German David Fincher? Dark moody visuals, a throbbing soundtrack, cold and clinical violence ... yep, his upcoming Stereo has more than a few points of contact with Fincher's signature style. Eric just wants to lead a mellow life and take care of his motorcycle workshop. He spends his free time with his new girlfriend Julia and her young daughter. It could all be so perfect. But this seemingly happy world comes to an abrupt end when an erie stranger, Henry, forces his way into Eric's life. Like a parasite, there's no shaking him off. His annoying and cynical way of doing things provokes and pushes Eric to the edge of madness. But when more shady...

Imagine 2014: Twitch Recommendations And Heads-Ups

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Europe has many fine genre film festivals, and Amsterdam's Imagine Film Festival, which starts this week, can proudly call itself a member of that group. The line-up for this year's edition is particularly impressive. There is anime and other animation, there are unique screenings like a Tsui Hark film in 3D, or a David Lynch film in 70 mm. There are international guests like Jodorowsky, and a few world premieres. Plenty of reasons for a good visit! As always the focus is on fantasy, science fiction and horror, but not exclusively so. Any sign of abundant creativity is enough to warrant being screened here. Being an annual festival, it does mean that there are also some great titles in there which have screened elsewhere already,...

TV Review: GAME OF THRONES S4E01, TWO SWORDS (Or, A Cavalcade Of Complaining Women Whine While One Girl Grows Up)

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Twitch continues with its ongoing series of recap / reviews of HBO's Game Of Thrones, written from the perspective of someone who has made the deliberate choice not to read the books so he can experience the series cold. Feedback is, of course, always welcome and encouraged but please respect the perspective of the writer and other readers unfamiliar with the source novels and limit discussions to the events that have unfolded on screen thus far and do not roam ahead....
