FIDOCS 2014 Review: PROPAGANDA Is Ultimately Universal Posted: 28 Jun 2014 04:00 AM PDT FIDOCS is one of the most important film festivals in Chile, as it's maybe one of the finest venues for documentaries from Chile and the world to be featured and seen in one week. Propaganda is a difficult film, due to its subject matter, the presidential election of last year in Chile, specially for people who are foreign to the technicalities of the whole endeavor, but I'll try to make some sense out of it. Propaganda is also one of the films in the Chilean Competition, whose winners will be known this Sunday.I had the idea that this movie, out of all of them, would be harder to talk and write about to an english speaking audience, specially since it's so immersed in the goings... |
RECONNECTION: Watch This Companion Piece To Hospital Doc CODE BLACK Posted: 28 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Physician Ryan McGarry's L.A. hospital documentary Code Black started its theatrical run last weekend and we have a unique companion piece to share with you. Reconnection combines dance and music to create a short film that works as a visual narrative for the film. It is really cool. Take a moment to check it out. In accompaniment of the U.S. theatrical release of the festival award-winning documentary CODE BLACK, the creative team behind the film presents a short film featuring a stunning mix of ballet and modern dance with a non-verbal, entirely musically driven narrative of young American doctors fighting to preserve the personal, bedside humanity of medicine in the shadows of an industry driven by profit, regulation and politics. This short film places world-class dance talent into the abandoned... |
Watch The Trailer For Wales' First Action Film KAMIKAZE Posted: 28 Jun 2014 02:30 AM PDT About this time last year we let you know that stuntman Marcus Shakesheff got the bright idea to head into Wales and make the action movie, Kamikaze. It would be the first action film ever shot in Wales and also marks Shakesheff's directorial debut. So, did all those years of stuntman experience pay off? I will not lie to you. Points for effort. But the execution? Yikes. First of all this is not a well cut trailer. The sound mix in the trailer is awful, right down to a crescendo with the Inception BWAAANG. The limitations of production budget are evident. Some of the editing in the fight scenes and choice of camera position is questionable. Characters are cut and paste and some of the acting... |
DOCTOR WHO, With Peter Capaldi, Gets A New Teaser, And A Premiere Date Posted: 27 Jun 2014 05:30 PM PDT Often keeping their cards right smack dab to their chest when it comes to things Doctor Who, the folks at BBC and BBC America have revealed the premiere date for series/season 8, starring The Thick Of It's Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor.Saturday, August 23 sees Capaldi's first full outing as number 12 in an episode entitled "Deep Breath". And while he won't be swearing up a flagpole on what is, yes, still a children's program, let's hope he can bring a bit of doom n' gloom to the role. It was also announced through the official Doctor Who Magazine that current showrunner Steven Moffat will be sticking around at least through series 9. In the eyes of some fans, that's sure to be a... |
Aubrey Plaza Is Feeling A Bit Peckish In Trailer For Zombie RomCom LIFE AFTER BETH Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT Beth (Aubrey Plaza) was dead but she's back now. And that's good news, right? Right? Her parents (John C Reilly and Molly Shannon) certainly want to think so, as does her bereaved boyfriend (Dane DeHaan) but ... well ... be careful what you wish for, etc etc.Zombified romantic comedy Life After Beth had its world premiere in competition in Sundance this year and with distributor A24 now gearing up for the theatrical release the first teaser has arrived online. This one's R rated, so you can expect a little more bite than what you got in similarly themed efforts such as Warm Bodies, but you'll get a taste of its distinct flavor in the trailer below.[In the interest of full disclosure, XYZ Films - where... |
Anders Thomas Jensen Returns To Directing With MEN AND CHICKEN Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:30 AM PDT If you're pushing forty and want to feel like you've wasted your life, do what I do: Look up the filmography of Anders Thomas Jensen on the IMDB. Born in 1972, Jensen has become one of the most sought after and acclaimed screenwriters in the world boasting credits on a whopping 48 projects since 1996 - a fistful of Oscar winners and Cannes selections among them. To say that Jensen has carved out quite a career for himself as a writer is perfectly true but it also overlooks the point that writing was not his original entry into the film world. Not writing for other people, at least. No, Jensen won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short for his 1999 effort Valgaften - this... |
SEA FOG: Watch The Teaser For Bong Joon-ho Produced Thriller Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT The Host director Bong Joon-ho slides into the producer's chair for his Memories Of Murder co-writer Shim Sung-bo's directorial debut, Sea Fog (HaeMoo), the based-on-a-true-story tale of a fishing vessel whose attempt to transport illegal immigrants ends very badly, indeed. With Bong's latest directorial effort, Snowpiercer, hitting US screens this week the first teaser for this new producing effort has arrived in Korea and it's not hard to feel the pedigree. Kim Yoon-seok, Park Yu-chun and Han Ye-ri anchor the cast. Check out the teaser below.... |
Moscow 2072 Is Plagued By MAFIA In New SciFi Posted: 27 Jun 2014 09:30 AM PDT Some things change while others stay the same. That appears to be part of the guiding principal behind Saric Andreassian's upcoming Russian science fiction film Mafia (Мафия). Set in a 2072 Moscow clearly littered with new technology, progress has not eliminated the presence of organized crime.Andreassian seems something of an odd choice for this sort of glossy, effects driven spectacle given that his background is almost exclusively in comedy but the first teaser has arrived to showcase some of the design and VFX work and though things are still quite early it looks good thus far. Take a look below.... |

OVER YOUR DEAD BODY: Watch The Blood Soaked Full Trailer For Miike's Latest Posted: 27 Jun 2014 08:30 AM PDT After a lengthy foray into more mainstream fare, Japan's premiere cinematic bad boy is back into the horror genre where he made his name in a big way. Yes, Miike Takashi has laid on more of the red stuff with his recent work than he has in several years and all signs are the blood will not abate any time soon.Up next on Japanese screens from Miike is Over Your Dead Body (Kuime), a loose adaptation of classic ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan. And following on a previous teaser back in April a full trailer has now arrived. Here's how Eigapedia translates the synopsis:An actor named Kosuke plays the role of Iemon in a stage version of Yotsuya Kaiden and his new lover Miyuki plays Oiwa.... |
Posted: 27 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT With Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer finally, FINALLY, in theaters on US soil, let's pick one of its many fine actors for this week's quiz. And as Song Kang-ho and Tilda Swinton were already covered in the past, we quickly turn to John Hurt. In Snowpiercer, John Hurt plays a role he's often done before: a man who is somewhat dilapidated, kind, benevolent, a learned academic, and very, very British. You'd almost forgot he has played an impressive string of villains as well, including some of the foulest dictators and emperors ever to (dis)grace a screen! Therefore, once again I'm going to use a gallery of ten close-ups of one of my favorite thespians to make a quiz, so click through the images and guess which ten... |
SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR, OPEN WINDOWS, THE SIGNAL And More At Film4 FrightFest 2014! Posted: 27 Jun 2014 07:05 AM PDT Attention UK genre film lovers! Film4 FrightFest has announced its feature film line-up for 2014, and by jove if it isn't pretty magnificent. Full disclosure, I am a shorts programmer for the festival, so I admit to a bit of bias. But I think you would be hard-pressed to find fault with this diverse programme, that features some of the best of fantastic cinema that have been making the festival rounds, as well as several world and UK/European premieres. The opening night (announced last week) is Adam Wingard's The Guest, and the festival will close with The Signal.Among some of the most exciting titles that I've seen and can highly recommend are Nacho Vigalondo's revolutionary Open Windows, Leigh Janiak's disturbing Honeymoon, James Ward Byrkit's mind-bending... |
