Legendary Producer Menahem Golan Has Died Posted: 08 Aug 2014 03:21 PM PDT Menaham Golan, a legendary filmmaker, has died at the age of 85, according to Haaretz. Golan began his career as a writer, producer, and director in the early 1960s, in partnership with his cousin Yoram Globus, but despite an Academy Award nomination for Sallah in 1964, it wasn't until his cult hit The Apple in 1980 that he gained international recognition. Shortly before that, Golan and Globus took control of The Cannon Group, and from there things took off, as the pair focused on action films that translated well both in the U.S. and the worldwide market. Cannon dominated that sector of the market throughout the 1980s The company was bought up in 1989 after a series of financial disappointments, though Golan continued making movies for another 25... |
Nicolas Cage Goes From West To East In OUTCAST Teaser Posted: 08 Aug 2014 03:01 PM PDT Two worlds will collide in the US/China co-production action period piece Outcast. Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen star as exiled Crusaders entering medieval China and protecting Yifei Liu (aka Crystal), as princess Zhao Lian, from her evil brother, played by Andy On. The film marks the directorial debut of Nick Powell, who has extensive experience as a stunt coordinator, with recent credits including Resident Evil: Retribution and The Three Musketeers. When the heir of the Imperial throne becomes the target of assassination by his despised older brother, the young prince's only hope is the protection of his sister, and the reluctant aid of war-weary Crusader, Arken (Hayden Christensen), who must overcome his own personal demons and rally the assistance of the legendary Crusader-turned-bandit, Gallain (Nicolas Cage),... |
Fantasia 2014: Twitch Wraps It Up With Our Reviews And Top Picks Posted: 08 Aug 2014 02:15 PM PDT It was a banner year, the 18th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival. Yes, the festival is old enough to drink alcohol now in La Belle Province, and over the three weeks of cinema -- both cutting edge and delightfully retro, a vibrant development marketplace, several book launches, all night karaoke sessions and other assorted movie mayhem -- many a film was watched, many a conversation had, copious amounts of poutine and duck confit were devoured, and untold pints of Cherval Blanc were quaffed. While Fantasia is not quite the full on Spring Breakers Bacchanalia of Fantastic Fest, it is the friendliest high-energy film festival of its size. Nearly every night of the massive 22 day marathon stretches well into the daylight hours of the... |
Hooray For Hollywood! No, Hollywood STILL Did Not Steal Your Script Posted: 08 Aug 2014 11:01 AM PDT For the last few days, my various in-boxes have been overflowing with friends, associates and strangers alike wanting to know what I think about the latest apparent revelation courtesy of the interwebs. "Did you know Nic Pizzolatto was a plagiarist??" Um, no. And I'm not sure I know that now. For those of you not finely tuned in to this latest brouhaha, let me bring you up to speed: Nic is the creator of HBO sensation True Detective, a fairly benign procedural that distinguished itself from the pack with the trifecta of movie-star casting, film-ish cinematography and an is-it-or-isn't-it-supernatural undertone (spoiler alert: it wasn't). From the moment it aired, people noticed a number of influences on the writing -- some general in their execution, some... |

The Many Faces Of Helen Mirren Posted: 08 Aug 2014 08:00 AM PDT This week, Lasse Hallström's The Hundred-Foot Journey premieres in the US, a story about two restaurants making each other's existence miserable, until mutual respect and romance get the upper hand. But what caught my eye here was the actress playing the tyrannical proprietress of one of the eateries: the great Helen Mirren. For decades, Helen Mirren has been very, VERY visible in films across all genres and qualities. Some of her roles are mainstream, some rather more daring, and some quite controversial. But whether she's wearing a crown, holding a gun, or both, she is always awesome, effortlessly switching from smoldering to icy within a second, if need be. So once again I'm going to use ten close-ups of one of my favourite thespians to... |
