Review: INTO THE STORM Comes Alive When The Wind Blows Hard

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 06:01 PM PDT

"The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind," sang Bob Dylan in the early 1960s. Fifty years later, the question is, Why would anyone want to make a new version of Twister? As someone who once stood, fascinated, in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, watching a storm a couple of blocks away before a woman said, "Hey, that's a twister!," I can certainly testify to the endless appeal of giant freaking storms. (I took shelter in the parking garage of the building where I worked, and watched with other eyewitnesses as the tornado blew through downtown.) If you, too, are endlessly fascinated by tornadoes -- and especially if you don't remember the 1996 blockbuster movie, written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, and directed by...

So, you want to get an idea of what to expect when you watch Jesse Thomas Cook's Septic Man? Well, do we have a treat for you! Mind you, this is not exactly what *I* would call a treat. Rutger Hauer Is Making CLONES

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Rutger Hauer wants to copy your brain. And there's a fighting chance it's not going to go particularly well. At least that's what I took away from the trailer for Rafael Bolliger's handsome scifi short Clones. But it's Rutger, right? It must be safe to let him play with my head ... he'd never let anything go wrong, right?Take a look at the trailer below....

SONGS SHE WROTE ABOUT PEOPLE SHE KNOWS: Watch The Teaser For The Toronto Selected Musical Comedy

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 09:00 AM PDT

I have a habit of singing pointless, made up songs about random things happening around me. Ask The Boy about it if you want, it drives him crazy. Which is part of why I do it - and do it far, far more often when he's in earshot - if I'm being honest. But Carol? The protagonist of Kris Elgstrand's TIFF selected musical comedy Songs She Wrote About People She Knows? Carol takes this to a whole new level.Carol, an emotionally repressed woman, loses friends and alienates people when she begins singing songs she wrote about people she knows. But she unexpectedly inspires her boss, to whom she dedicates the song Asshole Dave, to attempt to reignite his dream of becoming a rock star. As...

THE EDITOR: Astron-6 Lay On The Blood With The Teaser For Their Toronto Selected Giallo Comedy

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 08:30 AM PDT

They've gone from a group of friends making fake trailers for movies that never existed to clashing with Troma to now launching their latest feature film - giallo comedy The Editor - on one of the biggest stages in the world. Is it fair to call the rise of Astron-6 meteoric? We'll likely have to wait until we see how audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival respond to The Editor to apply that particular tag but it's pretty damn impressive, no matter what, and now you can get a taste with the release of their first teaser.A one-time (and now one-handed) master film editor toiling in the cinematic sweatshops of 1970s Italy becomes the prime suspect in a series of brutal murders, in this...

Review: WHAT IF Pretends To Be A Modern, Hip Romantic Comedy

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 08:01 AM PDT

Romantic comedies that discredit the integrity of a main character lose me entirely. Near the beginning of the new romantic comedy What If (titled The F Word in other territories), directed by Michael Dowse (Goon), the character played by Daniel Radcliffe makes it clear that he hates cheating. His parents set a bad example for him, cheating early and often in their relationship before calling it quits when he was in his early teens. (Then, evidently, they both died, because they're never seen or heard from again.) Therefore, he detests that sort of thing, and it's the reason he broke up with his last girlfriend a year before the movie begins. But then Wallace (aka Radcliffe) meets the charming Chantry (Zoe Kazan) and instantly sparks...

Review: THE DOG, An Engrossing Look At The Real Guy Behind DOG DAY AFTERNOON

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 07:01 AM PDT

Highly entertaining if slightly indulgent, The Dog looks at the life of John Wojtowicz, the man who was portrayed by Al Pacino in Sidney Lumet's classic Dog Day Afternoon. Wojtowicz is a pretty fascinating guy who crammed more than his share of lives into his time on earth, and we learn from a series of frank and, at times, filthy interviews about his various escapades. To the film's credit, it effectively situates his life within the nascent gay rights movement of the early 70s, showcasing through a series of vintage documentary footage the environment in which the more celebrated events of Dog Day Afternoon took place. Behind the sensationalistic story of a bank robbery committed so that a man could get his male wife a...
