Crowdfund This: Ashlea Wessel's INK Promises Atmospheric Horror

Here's one thing I know about Ashlea Wessel's upcoming short film Ink: It's going to look fantastic. An award winning photographer, Wessel is making her directing debut with the proposed horror short and she's looking for a little bit of help. After a pregnancy scare, JOEY marks the occasion with a new tattoo and a drunken night of distraction.  When she arrives home in the early hours of the morning, she's confronted with the truth about what she really wants and the past that's driven her to the brink of obsession.  Her desires and circumstances intersect to awaken a bond between her and an ancient force; a monster from unknown depths who's magnetically drawn to her.The needs here are pretty modest and Wessel's visual style instantly...

Check Out The Poster And Production Stills From Tsui Hark's TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN!

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 02:30 PM PDT

We have the official poster for Tsui Hark's upcoming 3D epic Taking of Tiger Mountain and some behind the scenes stills featuring the director at work. The film is set to open during the highly coveted Christmas season on Christmas Eve! The poster is quite fun, featuring who I believe is Zhang Hangyu standing on the tail rudders of a flaming aircraft, while someone else from the front seat takes pot shots at him. What fun indeed! And that final shot of Hark walking towards the camera, cigar in hand? Cool. Remember you can click on each image to appreciate each flaming aircraft part. ...

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 02:15 PM PDT

Heads up animation fans, director Joel Dos Reis Viegas' indie effort Urbance may just be your new favorite thing and he's looking for your help to bring it to life."In a post-modern city torn by street violence, sex is prohibited because of a deadly genetical virus infecting the entire population. Men and women have grown apart, hating each other until two young rebels, disowned by their own gangs, are leading the fight to live their love freely."In the crumbling inner city, sex kills. The urban landscape is split in two -- men on one side, women on the other-- opposing each other. COEVO seems to be the only hope: a government medical treatment developed to cure every single citizen except that those wearables haven't produced...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: FORCE MAJEURE Is The Funniest Of Black Comedies

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 01:30 PM PDT

There is a certain kind of Scandinavian black humor that when done well, is just about the funniest comedy around. This was on prime display in Morten Tyldum's Headhunters from a few years back. That film took a crime thriller and injected it with a hilarious Norwegian sense of humor to a degree of success that few movies have reached since. In Force Majeure, Swedish director Ruben Östlund attacks this challenge head on. Amazingly, he succeeds wildly. Force Majeure is one of the funniest films of the year. It also sets a new high water mark for Scandinavian black comedy. Ostensibly a relationship drama, Force Majeure follows a family over the course of a week's vacation at a luxury ski resort. Everything is going just...

China Blocks Nicolas Cage's OUTCAST Hours Before Release

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

While Hollywood continues to scramble after rapidly growing Chinese box office numbers the unpredictability and risk of the market and it's often unpredictable censorship laws continues to inspire a certain degree of fear. And Nicolas Cage starring period action film Outcast has just become the latest cautionary tale, the Chinese co-production blocked from release just hours before it was scheduled to hit over five thousand screens in the nation. Why? Nobody knows because the people who made the decision aren't saying. Will they be able to release later and make some use, at least, on the money already spent marketing the film? Nobody's saying that, either.Variety has what details there are here....

Feratum 2014 Second Wave Of Films: ABCs OF DEATH 2, V/H/S: VIRAL, DER SAMURAI, WHY HORROR?, And More

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

The upcoming third edition of Feratum (October 2-5 in Tlalpujahua, Mexico) is undoubtedly a very promising genre celebration. If the official selection announcement brought few renowned titles, now the second wave is precisely full of those. ABCs of Death 2 and V/H/S: Viral, the two most anticipated horror anthologies of the year, are premiering in Mexico at Feratum. ABCs of Death 2 is composed of 26 short films by such directors as Aharon Keshales and Navot Pupushado, Jen and Sylvia Soska, and Bill Plympton. After its premiere at Fantastic Fest, this sequel has been widely regarded as a much superior film to the 2012 original. On the other hand, the third V/H/S movie combine efforts by Gregg Bishop, Nacho Vigalondo, Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, and Marcel...

New York 2014 Review: 3D As Visual Art Form In Godard's GOODBYE TO LANGUAGE

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

3D seems like it is here to stay, for now. It was a gimmick to win back the audiences the film industry lost to the emergence of TV in the 50s, now it is revived as a last ditch effort to save the ailing industry, probably until TV starts broadcasting its contents in 3D (as we all know, it's only a matter of time that we'd be enjoying our football games and movies at home with silly glasses on). But can this new/old technology be elevated onto an art form, rather than being used exclusively to show us a mangled hunk of metal/asteroid as it hurtles toward us? If Werner Herzog's awe inspiring Cave of Forgotten Dreams and now Jean-Luc Godard's Goodbye to Language are any...

The Many Faces Of Denzel Washington

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

This week, The Equalizer premieres all over the world, confidently starring Denzel Washington as the friendly protagonist who kicks ass like no other (when called for). Confidence can be a seductive thing, and Denzel Washington exudes it so easily that it makes him a magnetic appearance on the big screen. Just when I got bored with him always being "the right guy", he started playing charismatic villains as well, and sometimes even flawed people. And he is great as those too! So once again I'm going to use a gallery of ten close-ups of one of my favorite thespians to make a quiz. Click through the images and guess which movies they're from. No competition, no prizes, just for fun, try to see how far...
