Ben Wheatley Is Going Down The SILK ROAD For HBO

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Here's a welcome, unexpected gift from the entertainment gods: HBO has hired Kill List and Sightseers director Ben Wheatley to write, executive produce and direct a new original series called Silk Road. Details of the show's plot are being closely guarded for now, but what we do know is that they're calling it a "thriller" and it's said to be "in the vein of The Prisoner." Since that's not very much to go on, let's speculate a bit! Originally the Silk Road was a name given to a huge set of interlocking trade routes between Europe, Asia and Africa that were instrumental in the development of civilizations on all of the aforementioned continents. Students of history are welcome to leave comments guessing about the symbolic...

HK Filmart 2013: Why Aren't Rich Asians Investing in Movies?

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 04:00 AM PDT

"There are so many rich Asians. Why are they not investing?" Wilfred Wong, chairman of the Hong Kong Film Festival Society Limited, asked the question in his remarks during a conference this morning at Filmart. The discussion, centered on the theme "Challenges, Opportunities and Partnership for Asia's Film Industry," featured seven panelists expounding on that theme, and, as you might expect from any panel with that many successful executives, the presentation sometime ground to a halt as main points were repeated, essentially saying the same thing: Asian film industries need to work together. The panelists, however, are all veterans of companies in Hong Kong and China, so the lack of representation from other Asian territories was notable, notwithstanding the widespread experience of the executives throughout...

Timo Tjahjanto Reveals Blood-Spattered Kazuki Kitamura In New KILLERS Image

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 03:00 AM PDT

I don't know when we'll see it but Killers, the next collaboration from Indonesian horror duo The Mo Brothers, is getting closer. I can feel it grating in my bones. And to whet our appetite until we see some footage is a new still posted by co-director Timo Tjahjanto on his Twitter page - featuring Japanese actor Kazuki Kitamura as the murderous Nomura Shuhei.Kitamura, who is currently in Indonesia filming Gareth Evans' sequel to The Raid, plays one of two serial killers in the Mo Brothers' film who square-off against each other in bloody competition. See the links for more about the film, and the image below for a bigger version....

Help A Zombie Kangaroo Kick You In The Face

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 02:00 AM PDT

We love things kicking us in the face at Twitch, and we especially love when they are preposterous zombie animals that should have been unleashed into the wide world before now. Even better when the main character is a guy named Todd, as Twitch was founded by a guy named Todd.So it is with Waterborne, a new short film in the works which has a guy named Todd fighting a zombie kangaroo. Art imitates life really. This short film is to act as a prequel to a feature film, which presumably features the whole Twitch gang fighting off hordes of zombie fauna - including the famed Dropbear which often attacks tourists with its razor teeth. I'd like to see what weapons Gorber brings to the fight. Check out the Indiegogo page...

Steve Coogan Is In DOUBT

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 12:45 AM PDT

In Michael Winterbottom's The Trip Steve Coogan stars as a slightly manically magnified version of himself. The film has a rather hilarious running gag, and then clever nightmare sequence, wherein the actor-comedian deflects an offer to star in a U.S. TV drama. Knowing this makes the news that Coogan has signed on to star in House creator David Shore's new drama pilot Doubt all the more amusing.Set up at ABC, Doubt has Coogan playing a cop-turned-lawyer, which as an idea on paper just sounds ho-hum, but in the hands of the smarmy/charming Coogan, and with the capably twisted and eccentric writing of Shore (who helped make Brit Hugh Laurie a "house"hold name in America), could be damn good.If the pilot clicks with ABC execs, then...

Director Lynne Ramsay Doesn't Show Up For First Day Of Filming JANE GOT A GUN

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 11:15 PM PDT

In what must be one of the most left-field stories to come out of the industry in recent memory, We Need To Talk About Kevin helmer Lynne Ramsay never showed up for the first day of production on her new movie, the Natalie Portman starring western Jane Got A Gun. Deadline delivered the news, stating that when the cast and crew arrived to set on Monday in Santa Fe, New Mexico, their director was a no show, and is now apparently off the project entirely. Portman, who is producing with Scott Steindorff is determined to keep the production on track (Deadline says the production still has cash flow, with actors rehearsing scenes), which means they must find a new director. Like. Yesterday. Now we hear about...

Gorilla Hits a Baseball In MR. GO Teaser

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 09:38 PM PDT

Last week brought us our first look at Mr. Go, a Baseball-playing Gorilla headlining Showbox's new Korean comedy, but how does he look in action? Naver has the answer with the first 30-second teaser, featuring this CG character indulging in a variety of primate-related antics, and some initial interaction with baseball and baby girl Wei Wei, who will become his future manager.Based on a popular Korean comic by Heo Yeong-man, the live action film is directed by Kim Yong-hwa (Take Off, 200 Pounds Beauty) with a $20 million budget. The cast includes Xu Jiao (Starry Starry Night, CJ7) and Sung Dong-il (Take Off, 200 Pounds Beauty).Wei Wei grew up in the circus with a bat-swinging gorilla named Ling Ling. After her grandfather dies in the...

Sam Raimi To Direct Greg Kinnear As Ramshackle Lawyer In TV Pilot RAKE

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Television, meet Sam Raimi. Yep, after delivering critically-questionable box office hit Oz, the Great and Powerful to cinemas, news has come that Raimi will direct a TV pilot for Fox - the US adaptation of hit Australian TV series Rake, starring Greg Kinnear.Based on the Aussie TV show which I named as my favourite TV series of last year, Rake follows the chaotic and comedic life of criminal defense lawyer Keegan Joye (Kinnear), brilliant, frustratingly charming, and with zero filter. The Aussie version is a blast and I wholeheartedly recommend tracking it down, especially as with this news, the US version will be huge....

HK Filmart 2013: The Wild, the Crazy, and the Hopeful -- In Pictures

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 07:04 PM PDT

While my Twitch colleagues Todd Brown, James Marsh, and Pierce Conran have been spending their time watching movies and talking with distributors, sales agents, and filmmakers, I've been free to attend thematic conferences arranged by Filmart and roam the exhibitor floor freely. (And, yes, watch a couple of movies, too!) In my wanderings, I took photos of whatever caught my eye. I haven't seen very much that was too wild and over the top, but there are certainly a lot of romantic comedies, cop thrillers, martial arts movies, and moody TV shows to go around the world a few times, which I suppose is the whole idea of Filmart, where the industry gathers to fill time slots on hundreds of TV channels and figure out...

HATCHET III Teaser... Teases.

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 03:00 PM PDT

The Hatchet films have built up their following by adhering strongly to their own cast-iron formula: keep it fun, keep it gory, and keep the effects old-school instead of CGI. Oh, and have your hulking indestructible serial killer played by fan-favorite giant Kane Hodder. Practically none of this can actually be seen in the teaser for Hatchet 3, but... well, it is implied. Check it out below......

Review: I've Fallen For OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 02:30 PM PDT

I think the only proper way to fully convey the power, the majesty, the sheer awesomeness of Olympus Has Fallen is to do so with the same level of bombastic hyperbole that the film exhibits. It's as if the only way you can really sum up your experience of seeing this Die Hard-in-the-Whitehouse masterpiece is to talk in poster pullquotes. For example: "Butler serves up action on a silver platter in Olympus Has Fallen!" Now, that's obviously a not-so-clever pun on the name of our McClane substitute, but the sentiment remains. Gerard Butler chugs through the film with an incessancy that would make any McTiernan fan proud, totally nailing the vulnerable-yet-invincible dichotomy that's at the heart of this type of film. "The White House...

SXSW 2013 Review: KISS OF THE DAMNED Intricately Apes Classic Eurohorror, Warts And All

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 12:30 PM PDT

There are few subgenres of film quite as specific and instantly recognizable as '70s Eurohorror. Filmmakers like Jean Rollin, Jess Franco, Jose Ramon Larraz and a few others left an indelible mark on the international horror market. Their creations were just as concerned with sensuality as they were with shock value, and as a result, the films positively oozed sex, literally sometimes. It is from this mold that Xan Cassavetes (Z Channel) debut narrative feature, Kiss of the Damned, was cast. Cassavetes manages to recreate much of the atmosphere and feel of those classic Eurohorrors, often to the point of irritation for a true fan. Is it worth watching Kiss of the Damned when I can now reach into my Blu-ray collection and pull out...

Jewel Thiefs! Reindeer Herding! Sex for Trees! HotDocs Celebrates Its 20th In Style

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 11:18 AM PDT

One of the world's largest documentary film festivals, Toronto's HotDocs turns 20 this year.  To celebrate, they are screening a whopping 205 films from 43 countries from April 25th to May 5th at their dedicated cinema, The Bloor-Hotdocs Cinema, as well as a significant number of other venues in the city.Twitch's Jason Gorber here and I've just returned from the always welcome press conference (read: free breakfast) where we got a chance to see a few minutes of 12 O'Clock Boys, which for this fan of all things Baltimore (courtesy of worshiping David Simon) looks a-ma-zing. A clip from Caucus, about the insanity of Iowa's political machinery, looks like it sets the perfect tone of wryness, with a a particularly effective shot of Mitt Romney chugging a...

Attack Of The Arctic Cannibals! It's The First Trailer For THE COLONY

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Note to apocalypse survivors, and anyone else living in a barely inhabitable environment (space, underwater, etc): Do not respond to S.O.S. distress signals! Movies have worked hard to impart this valuable lesson, from Alien to the upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller The Colony. It's clearly too late for Bill Paxton, Laurence Fishburne and the rest of the people living out earth's next ice age in an isolated colony, but there's still hope for all of you!But yes, as the just-released trailer shows, the S.O.S. signal in The Colony leads to a swarm of not-quite-dead, ravenous cannibals and soon, it's shoot or be eaten. Take a look below, and if the trailer leaves you wanting more, be sure to check out Jason Gorber's extensive interview with Bill Paxton...
