Review: DOCTOR WHO S7E10, HIDE (Or, The Doctor And Clara Go Ghost Hunting)

"Hide" certainly has similarities with the other episode of Doctor Who written by Neil Cross, "The Rings of Akhaten," in that they both manage to sell the emotion of the story without constructing a coherent narrative throughout. When it begins, it seems that "Hide" is going to be a ghost story, but it reveals itself to be more interested in other things as it develops.Haunted houses always make for great places to set episodes of this show, with one of the most notable being "Blink," where the Weeping Angels are masterfully introduced. This episode probably isn't destined to be as memorable, but it is an effective installment in which we get to learn much about the Doctor and Clara as they travel to 1974 to search...

TTTT: Cruise at Earth's End: Watch it Spin Round to a Beautiful Oblivion

Posted: 20 Apr 2013 05:00 PM PDT

Hey, it's another TTTT column, where I, Jim Tudor, take you along on one of Tudor's Twitchin' Travel Tours! For this one, we leave the planet via bubbleship, only to return to to find it an abandoned post-apocalyptic wreck. That's right, I saw Oblivion. Here are a few of my thoughts on it: Oblivion (d. Joseph Kosinski, 2013. USA) When the rock band Eve 6 sang of spinning "'round to a beautiful oblivion" in the late 1990s hit song "Inside Out," the reference was to a heart in a blender. As kinda grotesque as that imagery is, the emotional turmoil it's meant to evoke is entirely relatable to many of us in the past decade-plus. The intensity of darkness, dread and lament in popular culture...

Watch WRECKED, A New Short From The Directors Of RESOLUTION

Posted: 20 Apr 2013 01:30 PM PDT

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are well known and appreciated in these parts for their genre subverting feature film Resolution. Some of you may also know them because of their absurd and hysterical promo videos, which were made to help promote the film at every festival it played at. Now, while they made a great little promo for their new short film, I thought it best to just straight up share the short instead. Makes sense, right? Wrecked is the first short film to be made under a new Youtube Channel called Picture Show. It's an initiative between Tribeca Film and Maker Studios which teams up talent from the online world with emerging filmmakers of the indie persuasion. In a Youtube world that's populated with...

ADRIFT IN TOKYO Director Miki Satoshi Returns With IT'S ME, IT'S ME!

Posted: 20 Apr 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Director Miki Satoshi must really, really like star Kamenashi Kazuya- a member of pop band Kat-Tun - because he's put the pop star into his latest film a whole lot of times. Miki has been a great favorite around these parts for years now, the director of Adrift In Tokyo building a loyal following thanks to his quietly absurd sense of humor and unusual ability to balance out his quirks with legitimate depth. And his latest effort sounds like no exception to his normal rule. It's Me, It's Me (Ore, Ore) stars Kamenashi as a young man who attempts to run a simple scam and ends up duplicating himself. And then the duplicates begin duplicating until, suddenly, there are rather a lot of him. Which...

Watch The First Trailer For Keanu Reeves' MAN OF TAI CHI

Posted: 20 Apr 2013 10:53 AM PDT

Though there is still no North American release date announced for Keanu Reeves' directorial effort Man Of Tai Chi the international marketing campaign is already well under way. The poster intended for the Chinese market turned up last week and that has now been followed by a Chinese language trailer. What do we get? Plenty of fighting, lots of Keanu, lots of star Tiger Chen, and bits of Karen Mok and Simon Yam. This plays more like a teaser than a full trailer - as you would expect at this stage - laying out the basics of the story and promising more to come while clearly holding back some of the major fighters. No sign of The Raid star Iko Uwais, for instance. Take a look...

Cannes Selected BORGMAN Delivers A Dark And Twisted Teaser

Posted: 20 Apr 2013 10:15 AM PDT

The selection of Alex Van Warmerdam's Borgman as part of the competition program in Cannes marks the first time a Dutch film has vied for the top prizes on the Croisette in thirty eight years. And long time fans of the dark humor of Van Warmerdam's previous work will be glad to know he hasn't changed a thing in his approach to break that streak.BORGMAN is the central character in Alex van Warmerdam's dark, malevolent fable. Is he a dream or a demon, a twisted allegory or an all-too-real embodiment of our fears?  BORGMAN is a sinister arrival in the sealed-off streets of modern suburbia. His presence unleashes a crowing gallery of distortion around the careful façade constructed by an arrogant, comfortable couple, their three...
