Review: MINER'S BREAD, Waiting For Individualism In Slovakia

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT

The Slovakian film industry has, as of late, been rather prolific in its production of documentaries, with notable works including Bell of Happines (directed by Martin Šulík and Jana Bučka), The Case of Cervanová (directed by Róbert Kirchhoff) and Graduates - The Freedom Is Not Free (directed by Tomáš Krupa). An amusing irony arises from the fact that many recent narrative features of some note were made by filmmakers who primarily work in the documentary format which is the case for Juraj Lehotský (Blind Loves, Miracle) or Iveta Grófová (Made in Ash). The main focus in all of these films, whether fiction or non, have largely centered around national affairs that are not only political in nature, but social as well. In the case of...

Melbourne 2013 Review: MYSTERY ROAD Is A Beautiful, Repetitive Procedural

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Mystery Road, the new Australian film by Ivan Sen that opened the Sydney Film Festival makes the most of its location and recalls films such as No Country For Old Men with its bare-bones harsh reality set against the backdrop of a sun-soaked, baked outback.Aaron Pedersen plays the Indigenous Detective Jay who returns from the 'big smoke' of the city to the remote outback town in which he grew up. Jay's return is not in vain; he is quickly tasked with solving an intriguing murder of an Indigenous teen who is found at dawn by a truck driver in a drain under a highway. Alienation drives his investigation as both friend and foe alike turn a blind eye to him in his search for the truth, but when another similar...

Fantasia 2013 Review: DOOMSDAYS, A Charming 21st Century Slacker Manifesto

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT

In the delightfully static opening shot of Eddie Mullins' Doomsdays, we find two young men making a quick escape from a low window of a handsome Upstate New York home as the real owners walk in the front door unaware that their abode has been used as way-stop on their journey to nowhere. One of the pair comes forward in the unbroken shot to slash the homeowners' car tire before they trot off into the deep focus of the frame. It is an early taste of the many witty, deadpan comic vignettes that gradually combine to form a character (and social) study -- and what just might be the best American slacker film of the 21st century. The bushy-bearded Dirty Fred (Justin Rice), in his...

Wither 47 Ronin? Word of mouth spread that the production was troubled, but the movie is heading to a Christmas release with a full head of steam, as demonstrated in the colorful, CGI-infused, action-packed first trailer, featuring Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ko Shibasaki, Tadanobu Asano, and Rinko Kikuchi. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)--a half-breed they once rejected--as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. New Zealand Bans MANIAC. Elijah Wood Is Not Happy

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 12:30 PM PDT

If you want to see Elijah Wood play a serial killer in New Zealand, you'll need to use your imagination, because the Office of Film and Literature Classification has banned Maniac from general screening there. The film may be shown at film festivals, but a DVD release will not be allowed. Ant Timpson, who programmed the film for the Incredibly Strange section of the New Zealand Film Festival, said in a statement: "The OFLC decision says that the film may be 'injurious to the public good' if it goes out on a wider release. It's saying that the POV nature of the film mixed with the psychopathic behaviour of actor Elijah Wood is more than disturbing, that it's potentially dangerous in the hands of the...

Sylvester Stallone Returning As Rocky In CREED With FRUITVALE STATION Star And Director

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Sylvester Stallone will once again play Rocky Balboa, this time as a trainer in a movie to be called Creed. According to Deadline, MGM has set Ryan Coogler to direct, and is in early talks with Michael B. Jordan to star as Apollo Creed's grandson. Coogler made his directorial debut with the powerful drama Fruitvale Station, in which Jordan gave a magnificent performance as Oscar Grant, Stallone, now 67, is about the same age that Burgess Meredith was when he played Rocky's trainer Mickey in the first film, back in 1976, so this is a natural progression for the character and the series. The current regime at MGM is evidently on a mad dash to remake all the properties they own -- Robocop, Poltergeist, Red...

Chaos Reigns In New Trailer For Álex de la Iglesia's WITCHING AND BITCHING

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Álex de la Iglesia calmed down a bit with his last film, As Luck Would Have It, but, based on this totally bonkers trailer for Witching and Bitching, he was just gathering strength to unleash a barrage of mayhem, including but not limited to: a gun-wielding Jesus in gold paint, an unpainted, gun-weilding child, multiple car flips and accidents, sexy witches, unsexy witches, severed fingers, horrifying rituals, funny hats and... oh, just watch the trailer. It's in Spanish, but surely we can agree that this much chaos transcends language barriers?  And, in case you want to try to make sense of it all, here's a plot synopsis, courtesy of Shelagh M. Rowan-Legg's previous write-up of the film:Hugo Silva and Mario Casas (both currently very hot properties...

Oops! GRAVITY Trailer Detaches From Reality

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Raise your hand if you've ever been in space. Anyone? Anyone? Neither have I. And therefore I submit that the newest trailer / clip for Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity is firmly detached from any reality that I have ever known. So, yes, there is something decidedly unearthly and unreal about this footage, yet my heart rate increases and my blood pressure rises when I watch it, and I dearly hope that Cuaron delivers on the promise that we've seen in the promotional material so far. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock star. The movie will debut at the Venice Film Festival and then screen at the Toronto fest before opening in theaters on October 4....

Would You Like to Do Remarkable Things? First PATRICK Trailer Electrifies

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Ah, yes, here we go. Filmmaker Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood) has remade Richard Franklin's 1978 shocker Patrick and the first official, full-length trailer is, well, electrifying. In this very modern twist on the Frankenstein story, Charles Dance is a doctor experimenting on a comatose patient named Patrick. But he describes his experiments as the opportunity to do "remarkable things" when he talks to new nurse Sharni Vinson, who is strangely drawn to the nice-looking young man lying prone on a hospital bed. Rachel Griffiths appears to be a veteran nurse who is on hand to issue stern warnings. The trailer looks as though Hartley has taken the best elements of Ozploitation and mixed them with three very strong dramatic performances. The film is due...

BIG BAD WOLVES Gets Big, Beautiful, FrightFest Poster

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Soon to serve as the closing night presentation of FrightFest UK, Aharan Keshales and Navot Papushado's Big Bad Wolves has gotten a big, beautiful, English poster, courtesy of artist Peter Strain and FrightFest Originals. We present it in all its glory below. And, for comparison's sake, we also have the full-sized Israeli theatrical poster that we debuted about 10 days ago. A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder....

Destroy All Monsters: You've Been Comic-Conned

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

The first time I went to YouTube to watch a trailer for an upcoming movie and was forced to sit through 15 seconds of an unrelated ad before I was allowed to watch the ad I had freely volunteered to watch, I realized we had entered a viper pit of marketing where the original pleasures of a circle-jerk - moderate pleasure for modest reciprocal effort - were no longer even available, given that we are now apparently required to give reacharounds to ourselves. So it is with Comic Con, the annual summer solstice festival / Burning Man for the North American geek community, most of whom are peripherally aware of comic books as the things that were somehow involved in the early stages of the...
