MUPPETS MOST WANTED Teaser And Images: It's A Sequel! With Ricky Gervais! And Dancing!

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

For all the Muppet lovers in the world, the wait until the next film in the venerable franchise ends on March 21, 2014, is interminable. To make the endless days pass a little more quickly, a teaser trailer and several new images have arrived. Disney's Muppets Most Wanted takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe's most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine--the World's Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit--and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and...

Review: UNBEATABLE Goes For The Gut, But Not The Face

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 09:33 PM PDT

Dante Lam forgoes his penchant for high octane pyrotechnics to deliver this character-focused drama about a pair of MMA fighters that boasts strong performances but sparse action in a by-the-numbers story of redemption. After an excellent run of form over the past five years, Dante Lam has firmly established himself as the most exciting and innovative action director working in Hong Kong today. In films like Beast Stalker, Fire of Conscience and The Stool Pigeon, Lam crafted thrilling narratives around strongly drawn antiheroes, that probed the male psyche as effectively as they delivered impressive action.Unbeatable is a notable change of pace for the director, foregoing the explosive set-pieces and epic scale that threatened to consume his last film, The Viral Factor, instead focusing on the personal...

Melbourne 2013: THE TURNING Gala Showcases Directors to Watch

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 09:00 PM PDT

For the past two weeks the Melbourne International Film Festival has taken over the city and Twitch (both myself and prolific reviewer Kwenton Bellette) have been everywhere, attending as many films and events as our eyes and livers can handle. Kwenton has been jamming in film after film and reporting from the frontlines, while I've been busy at the MIFF 37ºSouth Market and Accelerator and Shorts events, as well as seeing a few films on the side. We've also been attending events and premieres, with perhaps the biggest and most prestigious of these the centrepiece Gala World Premiere for The Turning that was held on Saturday 3 August. This is a film you'll be hearing a lot about. An adaptation of Tim Winton's best-selling anthology of...

First Trailer For Selvaraghavan's IRANDAM ULAGAM Blows Minds

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 08:30 PM PDT

A few days before the ridiculously loud trailer for Krrish 3 exploded online, a trailer for another highly anticipated fantasy film made its bow, and this one feels much better to me. Irandam Ulagam is the latest film from acclaimed Tamil language director Selvaraghavan, who happens to be the brother of one of India's finest young actors, Dhanush K Raja. Irandam Ulagam is a two part story set both in the real world and in a fantastical land that appears to be wonderfully realized in Selvaraghavan's hands. As is normally the case, not much is known of the plot. Even the official descriptions are hesitant to go beyond calling it simply a romantic drama. However,it looks quite ambitious, and ambition is something that is sorely lacking in...

Harrison Ford Joins THE EXPENDABLES 3, Bruce Willis Departs

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 03:30 PM PDT

And with a tweet it was so. Of course, there's so much we don't see behind the scenes, but Expendables mastermind Sylvester Stallone took to his Twitter today to make a double whammy of an announcement with this exclamation laden tweet:WILLIS OUT... HARRISON FORD IN !!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!What Ford's role is in the Patrick Hughes directed threequel has yet to be revealed, although knowing Sly and these movies, he's going to be playing a surly, older gentleman who used to kick a lot of ass. Still, one can hope Ford will finally be getting that shot at playing one half of a Siamese twin mime duo, can't they?  Meanwhile, Willis stepping down from his nearly cameo status role is...

Review: WE'RE THE MILLERS Smuggles a Few Kilos of Laughs Across the Border

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

There isn't much about We're the Millers that separates it from the typical snarky, quasi-feel-good raunchy comedy, but it deserves credit for one thing: finding a new twist on the familiar premise of mismatched strangers being forced to take a road trip together. In this scenario, a shiftless Denver weed dealer named David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) must settle a debt with his wealthy supplier (Ed Helms) by smuggling some marijuana -- "a smidge, maybe a smidge and a half" -- from Mexico into the U.S. To avoid suspicion at the border, David has the genius idea of gathering some accomplices, piling into an RV, and pretending to be a typical (read: nerdy) middle-American family on vacation. Now, why David has to recruit near-strangers, I don't...

Check A Fabulous New Pair Of Stills From Jeff Barnaby's RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 01:30 PM PDT

We have been outspoken fans of director Jeff Barnaby since we first came across his short film work here at Twitch some years ago. A native Canadian filmmaker who wears his politics on a very confrontational sleeve in a way sure to challenge audiences of all stripes - his critiques encompass both native and white cultures and his satiric voice is biting in the extreme - and we have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of his debut feature Rhymes For Young Ghouls.Red Crow Mi'gMaq reservation, 1976: By government decree, every Indian child under the age of 18 must attend residential school. In the kingdom of the crow, that means imprisonment at St. Dymphna's. That means being at the mercy of "Popper", the sadistic Indian agent...

Fantasia 2013 Review: OXV: THE MANUAL Has A Mighty Brain But A Heart Three Sizes Too Small

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

There are two mantras at play in the offbeat philosophy lesson traveling in the guise of a film with the gangly moniker of OXV: The Manual. The first one is that "knowledge determines destiny," and the second is that "all you need is heart, soul and a little imagination." The film is chock-a-block full of knowledge, destiny and imagination, but suffers a bit from a lack of heart and soul. Whatever qualities bring you to the cinema will likely determine how you feel about this science fiction curio, but for me, personally, the failure to land the love story left me wanting a better film attached to this story that is constantly spewing out ideas like a fountain at the unfortunate cost of emotional involvement. This feels...

ENDER'S GAME Belongs To Harrison Ford, According To New Trailer

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

As much as I enjoyed Orson Scott Card's novel when I read it sometime in the 1990s, I can't help feeling that the movie version looks completely generic so far. And the newest trailer doesn't change that feeling. What the trailer reinforces is that this is Harrison Ford's movie. That makes perfect sense from a marketing standpoint -- it's Harrison Ford's return to sci-fi! (Please forget that Cowboys vs. Aliens nonsense) -- though if the movie as a whole makes Ford's character the centerpiece, much of the original's unique perspective will be lost. And I'm afraid that director Gavin Hood's previous foray into big-budget filmmaking (2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine) does not inspire any advance confidence. I'm always open to being surprised, though, and perhaps Ender's...

Fantasia 2013 Interview: Hallucinating and Elucidating MAGIC MAGIC with Director Sebastián Silva

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Magic Magic is a tight psychological bit of hysteria on just how far a breach of social contract can go, that sees an awkward Michael Cera terrorizing wilting wallflower Juno Temple at an island cottage in Latin America. After being wowed by Chilean horror picture at this years Fantasia festival (that is just now wrapping up its lengthy run) I had a chance to talk to the director, Sebastián Silva, about the film by phone. Verbose and enthusiastic, we talked about the nature of constructing this kind of cinema, which is rare these days. Magic Magic is out on DVD and VOD today, and comes with the highest of recommendations. There are, perhaps, some very minor *SPOILERS* in the discussion below, but this conversation should server more to enhance a...

See More Evil With The Soska Sisters: SEE NO EVIL Getting A Sequel

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

In all the annals of sequel-dom, is there is a more unlikely candidate for a sequel than a horror movie starring a wrestler-turned actor? A movie that grossed the grand total of $19 million worldwide, a pittance in the modern era? Released in 2006, See No Evil featured the WWE wrestler known as Kane as a psychopath named Jacob Goodnight, pitted against a group of delinquent teens in a broken-down hotel. Our friend, noted horror expert Scott Weinberg, reviewed the film for another site at the time of release. He described it as ...: ... a shamelessly derivative and helplessly inept piece of genre flotsam that rips off everything from Friday the 13th to Saw 2 -- and does so in only the most tiresome...

Check Out The Trailer For KRRISH 3, Bollywood's First Superhero Franchise

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

The first official trailer for hotly anticipated Bollywood superhero flick, Krrish 3 has arrived and it looks, um, explode-y. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, who also anchored the first two films (more on that later), as well as newly minted international celebrity Priyanka Chopra (Walt Disney's Planes, as well as a new pop album on the US charts), Vivek Oberoi, and Kangna Ranaut. The film has staked its claim on the typically very competitive Diwali holiday this year, which should clear out any other major releases that had been eyeballing the November date. The only other major film making a play for Diwali is Rajnikanth's comeback film, Kochadaiyaan, which will definitely have the South Indian market locked up for at least a few weeks. However, Rajni's film...

As previously reported, Amat Escalante's Heli opens in Mexico on Friday, August 9. So the director and his cast are here supporting their film and getting ready for the Mexico City premiere, to be celebrated at the Cinematheque (Cineteca Nacional) on August 6. Escalante, Armando Espitia (Heli), Andrea Vergara (Heli's sister Estela), Eduardo Palacios (Estela's boyfriend Beto), Linda González (Heli's wife Sabrina), Ramón Álvarez (Heli's father) and Reina Torres (Detective Maribel) already met with the press for a conference. Many topics were discussed, including violence in Mexico, Escalante's relationship with Carlos Reygadas, and, of course, the Cannes 2013 Best Director award. "Even if you don't like this type of cinema, you should give Heli an opportunity. Even (Steven) Spielberg liked it!" said Escalante. Here I...

DIANA Features Naomi Watts As The Princess Who Yearned For Another

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

While the first teaser for Oliver Hirschbiegel's Diana sold the idea of Naomi Watts playing Diana, Princess of Wales, filled with images but no dialogue, the first full-length trailer endeavors to capture interest by leaning on the forbidden romance angle. And it's, well, about what you might expect. That's the challenge for biographical portraits of famous people: the arc of Diana's too-short life is too well-known to contain much unexplored territory. To be fair, the film promises otherwise by concentrating on her final two years. A big benefit, too, is that Naomi Watts is a gifted actress, and her physical characteristics are close enough to Diana's, so that shouldn't be too distracting. And Naveen Andrews has also done good work, though it's hard to tell...
