Review: MALEFICENT Casts A Feminist Spell

Posted: 29 May 2014 10:01 PM PDT

Call her Beneficent. Rebooting the studio's 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty into a live-action version suitable for the 21st century, Maleficent casts a strong feminist spell. "I don't think she's very happy," says one of the fairies in Walt Disney's original production of the classic fairy tale, referring to a character whose name means "harmfully malicious." And so the new film, based on a screenplay by Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland), seeks to explain exactly why she wasn't very happy. Irregardless of her given name, young Maleficent (Isobelle Molloy) is a joyful fairy, frequently flying through a magical land filled with magical creatures. It's a world that's somewhat reminiscent of Avatar, which is not surprising, because Robert Stromberg,...

A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES: First Trailer And Images Suggest Liam Neeson Needs A Different Set Of Skills

Posted: 29 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Ever since 2008's Taken, Liam Neeson has excelled in playing mature action heroes "with a particular set of skills." In the upcoming A Walk Among the Tombstones, however, it looks like he will display a different skill-set. He's playing Matt Scudder, a former NYPD cop who now works as an unlicensed private investigator. The character was created by the highly-accomplished novelist Lawrence Block and has been featured in a long-running series of books. In this big-screen edition, Scudder is hired by drug dealer Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) to investigate the kidnapping and murder of his wife. The first trailer looks like Scudder's investigation will take him to dangerous places and lead to encounters with dangerous people. Scott Frank (The Lookout) wrote the screenplay and directed. The movie...

First BOOK OF LIFE Trailer Looks Mexican, Sounds American

Posted: 29 May 2014 01:00 PM PDT

The first trailer for The Book of Life, produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, looks like a fireworks truck crashed into a paint factory and exploded. And I mean that in a good way. That impression is confirmed by the first official images released for the film, via USA Today, which you can view in the gallery below. In the trailer, the screen is filled with colorful, eye-popping Mexican art, while all the characters sound American. It's a marketing approach that may pay off for 20th Century Fox, and I'm hoping that's all it is -- a marketing approach to appeal to the widest demographic possible, at least in the U.S. Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana are billed as the leads, though...

Opening: ELENA, An Impressionistic Tribute To Memories

Posted: 29 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT

It's a difficult job to create a film with a subject that is so close to its maker without coming across as a little too precious. Indeed, there are many moments in Elena that could be regarded as self-indulgent. But no one can deny that Elena is a breathtakingly beautiful, one of a kind documentary. Elena tells a story about a 20-year-old Brazilian actress who comes to New York to pursue her acting career. She leaves behind her younger sister Petra and mom. She falls into hard times. More than twenty years later, Petra Costa, now an actress herself, a filmmaker and a dead ringer for her sister, traces her big sister's footsteps in New York, trying to reconstruct who Elena was and also to...

Opening: WE ARE THE BEST! Showcases Adorable Pre-teen Angst Set In The 80s

Two 13-year old tomboys, Bobo and Klara listen to punk, hate their sports loving classmates and think their parents are super lame. After seeing some rude old geezers practicing yucky rock songs at a local youth center (thank goodness for living in a socialist country), they spontaneously set out to form a punk band out of spite. But they don't know how to play any instrument and still want to maintain the time slots they signed up for so the old geezers won't get to play. Then they see Hedvig, a blonde, christian good girl who has been playing classical guitar at the school talent show to unresponsive, downright rude audiences, year after year. Hedvig doesn't have any friends. Bobo and Klara decides to forcibly...

Review: NIGHT MOVES, A Tense Showcase Of Guilt And Paranoia

Posted: 29 May 2014 07:00 AM PDT

When purchasing a used boat for an act of extreme vandalism, a young activist quips that she chose the one named "Night Moves" because it was better in her mind than "Sea Breeze" or "Heart's Ease." I tend to pay attention to the names of boats and films because they are usually chosen with care. This is doubly-true when the name of the boat also happens to be the name of the film. And I'll admit, part of me wants Kelly Reichardt's choice of names to be based on the Gene Hackman noir from 1975 (directed by Arthur Penn), which does indeed feature a sinking boat, along with a healthy dose of paranoia and confusion and stylish ineffectuality. It's certainly a better boat name than...
